Some mums misunderstood sleep training = cry it out = sleep through the night. That's a misconception. Good sleep training actually aims at teaching baby to fall asleep independenty (ie not rock or nurse to sleep). I read a few books and did lots of research online before i decided which method to follow. The sleep training i followed emphasis building trust with the baby, follow a routine of eat, play, sleep, and teaching a baby how to self settle, NOT teaching baby to sleep through the night. It is against cry it out at any age, as it breaks the trust between parent and baby. It teaches a baby to self settle, starting by you patting and shhhing her to sleep. The baby should need less patting to fall asleep over the time (mine took 3 days only, from not being able to fall asleep unless i rock her fall 40min, to patting 5 min and the baby is asleep!) A baby who knows how to fall asleep by herself will sleep better in the night, and will naturally sleep through the night when she is ready (mine at 5 month old). I found that very helpful and vastly improved my daugghter's quality of sleep. It was NEVER about teaching her to sleep through the night and we never needed to do cry it out, not even once. |
