PREMIER Barry O'Farrell yesterday urged schools to talk to their community about changing class hours for young students.
Mr O'Farrell praised Merrylands East Public School in Sydney's west, which is consulting every family of its 381 students over a plan to start lessons an hour earlier at 8am and finish at 1.15pm.
"We would encourage the school communities to have those discussions," Mr O'Farrell said.
Mr O'Farrell said even if Merrylands East went ahead with the proposal, it would not necessarily be rolled out across the state because "one size does not fit all".
Macquarie University education research fellow Dr Linda Graham said children in the world's best performing education systems, such as Finland, started classes about 8am and finished between 1pm and 2pm.
"By one or two in the afternoon children are pooped out and tired, become fractious and they're not getting quality learning," she said.
Educational and developmental psychologist Danielle Tracey said neurological research showed children functioned more effectively in the morning.
"That is why schools often program the most challenging tasks such as maths and reading in the morning and do sport in the afternoon," she said. |
