比如
Wang and Li are (is) Chinese, hower, James and John are English

math and physics are(is) test(s) of a student's intelligent level.

Wang and Li are Chinese，whereas James and John are English. (whereas比however在这里更确切）

Maths and physics are subjects that can help test a student's intelligence level. (maths和physics本身不是"tests"而是subjects。)
