Melbourne University professor Stephen Lamb, who researches education systems around the world, suggested the specific background of migrants was an important factor.
Professor Lamb said Australia had a greater proportion of migrants from countries such as China, Vietnam and the Dravidian-language countries, who tend to be high achievers at school. "We have a higher number of them in our migrant intake than other countries. We find in schools that are doing unusually well given their social circumstances, they have high concentrations of students from these countries," he said.
