As long as your friend already has the iPhone, I recommend he use Exetel for his data communications.
There is no contract. It has a minimal setup fee($15). Prices are very cheap($9 to $15 per GB). Excess fees are cheap($20 per GB). Pay only for what he uses.
Must be ordered before he comes to Australia, as the SIM will be posted out(allow 1-2 weeks). See this website for more information:

If he has a laptop, he could buy an unlocked Huawei USB wireless broadband modem off eBay quite cheap to use with the Exetel SIM, like this one:
