PUTTING a child through private school could cost parents a staggering $500,000.
Families who choose a Catholic education will spend about half that over the 13 years of schooling, with the cost of education generally set to rise by around 6 per cent every year.

Figures from the Australian Scholarships Group show the cost of educating a baby born in 2011 in the public system will be $76,435, while the bill will be $226,087 at a Catholic school and $491,570 at a private one.

The figures include tuition fees, textbooks, uniforms, excursions and other expenses.

Schooling is cheaper in regional areas but will still set parents back between $66,179 and $326,924 from Year K-12.

Would you send your child to a private school?

The Australian Scholarships Group examined more than 8000 sets of school fees as well as other costs associated with sending a child to school, including uniforms, books, stationery, bus travel, excursions and computers.

Each of the figures were increased at the relevant consumer price index for the past 10 years.

The ASG's general manager for development, Frida Kordovoulos, said education was one of the fastest rising components of the consumer price index.

"During the past 10 years, education has risen at almost twice the rate of inflation," Ms Kordovoulos said.

Economists say that trend will continue.

AMP Capital chief economist Shane Oliver said the increase in education costs were fuelled by schools investing more in technology and teachers' wages rising.

"It will continue to rise unless there is a radical change to the way we educate children in the next 20 years, such as school going online," he said.

The Australian Scholarships Group study showed fees at a public primary school would cost around $865 a year, but parents should budget an additional $3456 for other costs.

Fees fall slightly to around $851 a year at a public high school, but parents would pay $3712 buying everything from books to backpacks.

At a Catholic school, fees would be as high as $3096 a year for primary and $8444 for high school. But parents can expect to spend between $3656 and $4113 in extra costs.

Fees would range between $11,412 and $18,194 for private primary and secondary schools in Sydney - the most expensive in the country - while other school costs could amount to between $4474 and $5411 each year.

Parents sending their child to a public pre-school should set aside around $5877, while a private pre-school would cost up to $14,124.

"School is actually a big-ticket item," Ms Kordovoulos said. "There is a total cost associated with schooling, which parents may overlook because they pay for the costs in small, incremental amounts, but the costs add up."

Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations of NSW spokesman David Giblin said parents should not be concerned by the cost of public schooling. He said parents should be aware that any fees quoted by public school were in fact voluntary.

The government's education tax refund, which provides up to 50 per cent back on children's education expenses, was also recently expanded to include school and sports uniforms to the existing provisions for stationery, laptops and textbooks.

An educated choice

PHOTOGRAPHER Kristy Doherty intended to send her daughter to a private school but a study showing it will cost almost $500,000 has her weighing up the options.

The 31-year-old Milperra mother said she and husband Graeme, 38, hoped to enrol Grace, three months, at Georges River Grammar in Georges Hall, but they would wait to see how many more children they had before finalising their decision.

"We will have to see our financial situation closer to the time," she said. "We would like to send her to a private school if we can but whether we can afford it will depend on how many children we have."

Casula mother Daniela Vicano, 35, said she and husband Anthony, an accountant, were looking at paying two lots of $226,087 to send their son Julian, four weeks, and daughter Emilia, 20 months, to a local Catholic primary and high school.

"We'll be budgeting in terms of how many children we have," Mrs Vicano said.

"We won't be having a big family, so we are able to afford it.

"We want to provide the best for our children and Catholic schooling is an important part of that for us."

Mt Pritchard mother Kate Stephens, a public school teacher, said she would send her son Thomas, 10 weeks, to Mt Pritchard Public School.

She said her son's $76,435 school bill was "a little easier to swallow" than the cost of a Catholic or private education.

"Although we don't need to pay that figure at once, it will still have an impact on us," Mrs Stephens said.
