Do you operate a business on eBay or Trading Post Australia? The ATO collects data and cross matches that to you. They then check your tax returns to see if you are declaring the correct income.
The ATO is now demanding and collecting information on online traders who sold goods and services over $20,000 in any of the past three financial years. The information is electronically matched with the Tax Office's data holdings. This identifies non-compliance with registration, lodgement and payment obligations under tax law.
The Tax Office regularly data matches against external sources of information to ensure that taxpayers comply with tax legislation. If you buy boats, expensive cars etc... then you are being watched.
If the ATO thinks you are conducting a business in a suspicious manner, you are contacted for an audit. That is if you are lucky. Other times, I have seen the ATO issue default assessments without even hearing your side of the story. The assessments are pregnant with interest charges (GIC) and penalties. - this often doubles the tax you are required to pay.
As you compile information for this year's tax returns for your accountant, as an Australian resident, you need to declare all income from all sources. This includes overseas income and income from the Internet. |
