Police divers have found the body of a man believed to be missing spearfisherman Brian Lam 100 metres off a beach in Sydney’s north.
Mr Lam, 31, a skilled diver with more than five years' experience, had been spearfishing with three others off Collaroy yesterday morning but failed to return with the group.
Police said witnesses spotted a body on the seabed in about 11 metres of water, about 300 metres from a boat ramp at Long Reef Point.
The body has not been formally identified but there are no obvious signs of injury, police said.
A kayaker in scuba diving gear paddled in to shore to tell 15 to 20 of Mr Lam’s anxious relatives who had spent the morning on the beach waiting for news.
Friends said Mr Lam founded the Ocean Buddy Dive Club and was a regular diver who knew the safety procedures.
Friends flooded his Facebook page with notes wishing for his safe return.
"Brian, praying that God will watch over you tonight and return you to us safely in the morning," one friend wrote.
"You love the sea so much may it hold you carefully tonight and let us have you back as the sun rises."
Water temperatures have been hovering around the 16 degree mark over the last few days.
Ted Lougher, an experienced spearfisherman and owner of Extreme Spearfishing on the Northern Beaches, said it was possible Mr Lam experienced "shallow water blackout’’.
"You overextend yourself on the bottom and the body’s oxygen supply just runs out and you suddenly black out,’’ Mr Lougher said.
"Whether he was caught on the bottom or trying to retrieve a fish out of a cave, I don’t know.’’
Mr Lougher said as Mr Lam was free diving, he should have had enough line attached to his spear gun to allow him to sit on the surface and take in enough oxygen after catching a fish.
"But if you’re diving in an area to a depth beyond your limitations and ability, you’re looking for trouble,’’ he said.
"It’s a very unfortunate tragedy that occurs from time to time but as an assistant (scuba) dive instructor I would have thought he would have known a little more and been a little more cautious.’’
Mr Lougher, whose business is based at Brookvale, near Long Reef and Collaroy, said he suspected Mr Lam’s body might have rolled deeper with tidal flows overnight.
He also said that Mr Lam could have had too much weight on his weight belt.
‘‘If he was on the bottom (when he was found) he was probably carrying more lead than he should have been,’’ Mr Lougher said. |
