do you have car or house insurance? if you do and your finance allows, you should buy private health insurance. The differece between a Medicare patient (public patient) and a private patient are many,
First, you will be treated by a specialist of your choice as a private patient. But when you are a public patitent, you will be treated by a doctor provided by the hospital, usually a registrar(specialist trainee) under the supervision of a specialist. The registrar can be a first year trainee or a trainee close to finish his/her training program. Eg. in a public hospital, an elective Caesarean sections are usually done by a first or second year obstetric trainee and emergency Caesarean sections are usually done by third- sixth year trainee. You may see different doctors at different shifts (shift works).
Second, for elective surgery, the waiting period for a public patient is usually long.
Third, you are most likely to have a private room in private hospital. You may share a room with a drug addict in a public hospital.
You may be discharged earlier as a public paitent. E.g home 48 hours after a normal birth in many public maternal hospital in contrast that your private insurance will pay for 4 night stay after a normal birth (in a private hospital).
Last, the food is better in private hospital. |
