It’s normal for some vehicles to have a fan run for a few minutes after the car is shut off, generally to keep the engine cool. However, if the fan is running for an extended period, the fan itself can become damaged due to overuse. These fans are designed to only cycle on and off when needed, and running continuously will shorten its lifespan.
Most electric fans in modern cars have modules that tell them when to turn on and off. It’s possible you may have a module or relay failing in your car. Have a mechanic inspect the electrical portion of your cooling system to be sure it’s running correctly.

Common Causes
If your cooling fan runs for over 15 minutes after turning off the engine, you may have a problem that needs to be fixed. Here are some possibilities causing the fan to stay running longer.
- low coolant level,
- faulty coolant temperature sensor,
- PCM or ECU defective
- coolant leaks from the water pump,
- cracked radiator,
- worn upper or lower radiator hoses,
- leaky heater core,
- leaky thermostat housing,
- rusted coolant bypass pipe,
- bad radiator fan relay,
- short in the electrical wires and so on.
If the fan continues to run for more than 30 minutes; disconnect the negative side of the battery cable to prevent the battery from being drained.
