More smart schools for Victoria
April 02, 2008 12:00am Article from: Herald Sun
VICTORIA'S first co-ed selective state schools for gifted children will open in outer growth suburbs Berwick and Wyndham Vale in 2010.
Premier John Brumby and Education Minister Bronwyn Pike yesterday announced the location of the two year 9-12 schools, which will give bright students from boom areas the opportunity for an advanced education.
The 1200-pupil Berwick school, in Melbourne's outer east, will be located at a Monash University campus.
The 800-student Wyndham Vale school, in Melbourne's outer west, will be built in Manor Lakes Blvd. It will have a partnership with Melbourne University.
The schools, which will be named next year, will ease demand on the state's existing select-entry schools, MacRobertson Girls High and boys school Melbourne High, which were Victoria's top VCE performers last year.
The new academically selective schools will open at the beginning of 2010, with 200 year 9 students each.
Current year 7 students will be eligible to sit entrance tests next year.
Mr Brumby said the university links would ensure students received the highest standard of education.
"These partnerships will allow highly able students to work on joint research projects, attend special classes and lectures, and share facilities with a tertiary institution," he said.
"There will also be exciting opportunities for staff from the universities and schools to work together."
The Berwick school will be built next to a train station, but the Wyndham Vale site is more than 7km from the nearest station.
It is believed the school will run buses to and from Werribee station.
The Government originally earmarked one of the schools for North Melbourne. Alternative plans are being considered for that site.
The proportion of students from other public or private schools will be capped at 5 per cent, to ensure they don't lose all their brightest students.
Beaconsfield mum Victoria Poulos said the Berwick school was great for the area.
Ms Poulos has two children, Isabelle, 9, and Brigitta, 7, who are home-schooled.
"I had to pull them out of school because it couldn't meet their needs, but this school will certainly give parents more options.
"I know families who have sold their homes and left for the city so their kids could go to a good school." |
