FIFTY years of looking after herself has just paid off in a spectacular way for Illawong resident Germana Morassi, 79, a former health education officer.
Answering an ad inviting 'ambitious and interesting ladies' to apply for an 'unforgettable experience' in an online selection process for the Miss National Australia competition, Germana was shocked to be contacted a few months later saying she was a finalist.
"I just applied for fun and never expected to hear anything further," Italian born Germana said.
The oldest walking the catwalk at the Stamford Plaza recently for the final and up against other women aged in the 20s and 30s, Germana was in a state of shock when she was named the winner - not only by the five-member judging panel but was also the online audience favourite.
"I won a lot of products and services and everyone was saying how amazing I looked for my age which was very nice," she said.
The mother of five children and grandmother of 14, still can't believe her win.
"I think everyone liked my national dress costume too," she said.
"I combined Italian elegance with Australiana; my top was shaped like the Sydney Opera House and I had Australian bird feathers in my hat.
"People ask me about my ageing secrets and I just explain that I have been careful with my diet since in my 20s, I walk, go to the gym three times a week and lift weights which is important for your bones," the former flamenco dancer added.
"As my lifelong professional work has been to teach people to live healthier lives, I would very much like to be invited as guest speaker within community groups to show we can still look good and enjoy our senior years even more so after retirement."
