Weekend workshops are a great way to explore your creativity and design ideas. Unlock the secrets of draping and explore unique textile design treatments in our range of first semester weekend workshops. Inspiring resources including garments from The Darnell Collection, contemporary fashion trends, and informative texts demonstrate the potential of the techniques and current uses by designer
Direct Patternmaking: an introduction to draping for fashion design
(2 Day Workshop, Saturday 28th March & Saturday 4th April, 10am – 4pm each day) tuition $300
Explore design & construction techniques used by renowned designers such as Vionnet and Dior.
You will be guided through the process of direct patternmaking or draping, working on a mannequin to develop a draped bodice from your own design. Working in an industry equipped studio and using supplied fabrics, students develop and make a structured undergarment which is the foundation for the draped design. You will explore and apply hands-on fashion design methods which provide skills in moving between two and three dimensional patternmaking. (Basic machine sewing skills are required).
The workshop concludes with an exhibition from 3.45pm and presentation of a workshop certificate for each participant. (see below for important information)
Workshop Equipment: items supplied by ESMOD – 75cm drill, 1.5m muslin, 20cm fusing, 1 spool of thread, boning, fastening, patternmaking card, printing paper.
Items supplied by each student - pencils, pen, sketch pad, rubber, ruler, pins & needles, tape measure, fabric scissors, paper scissors, USB stick.
Digital Patternmaking & Grading
Commencing: 25th April - 30th May 2009, tuition $400
6 week program, Saturdays 10am - 1pm
This course centres on using the latest Lctra programs for digital patternmaking & grading techniques. Students apply their manual patternmaking skills to develop digital lays and markers to industry standards. Pattern pieces are digitised, effiecient lays are developed and meterages recorded.
Required equipment: A4 display folder, pen/paper for taking notes, USB stick.
Textiles and Design - a series of One Day workshops 10am – 4pm, tuition $160 per workshop (materials included)
You will produce a range of samples applying a variety textile treatments and exploring the traditional origins and latest trends in these innovative techniques. (see below for important information)
Workshop 1 - Dyeing: shibori and natural dye techniques 28th March
Workshop 2 - Embellishment: couture beading and embroidery techniques 4th April
Workshop 3 - Printing: foiling, flocking and digital transfer techniques 16th May

Introduction to Patternmaking & Sewing Skills (8 week program, Wednesdays 6 – 9pm)
Commencing: 18th March 2009, tuition $475 (please note there will be no class held on 15/4 due to Easter break)
This course is taught by our French patternmaking specilaist and is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of patternmaking and garment assembly in a focussed and hands-on learning environment. Students will apply a range of techniques such as block development, dart manipulation, familiarisation with a variety of silhouette alterations and patternmaking terminology and symbols. Aspects of construction such as cutting, laying, fusing, yokes, pockets, waistbands, fastenings, inverted pleats and basic collars will be explored and applied to sample garments. Students will use domestic Bernina/Bernette sewing machines and Juki industrial machines to test their patterns and apply professional finishes to their garments. Industry suppliers of textiles & trims will be indentified and students will complete garment research files on different styles.
Required equipment: A4 Binder (45mm spine width) with plastic sleeves, A4 blank white paper & dividers, notebook to take notes during class, a mechanical pencil 0.5cm with graphite lead & refills, an eraser, large glue stick, 1 roll of scotch tape, 1 large set square ruler with 1cm seam allowance, 1 patternmaking/grading ruler (50cm), 1 french curve (43cm / ESMOD original design), a tracing wheel, a dart marker (sharp pointer), good quality metric measuring tape, 1 pair of paper scissors, 1 pair good quality fabric scissors, 1 box of extra-thin pins (for dressmaking use /no pearl-headed pins), 1 packet of universal domestic sewing machine needles size 70/80, 1 seam unpicker, 2 Spools of white or ecru polyester sewing thread, 5 Bobbins (plastic) for domestic Bernette/Bernina sewing machine, 1 plan tube to hold patterns.
Students will also need to bring lengths of calico to complete samples (this will be advised in class), and if they wish to regularly use the Juki industrial sewing machines, they will need to have 1 Juki bobbin case & 2 Juki bobbins.

Industry scenarios are applied where students receive design specifications and digitally pattern make the garment, applying a wide range of fabrication and sizing requirements. Fashion in the 20th Century: Haute Couture & the Origins of Ready-to-Wear Fashion (6 week program, Tuesdays 6 - 8pm)
Commencing 24th March, tuition $320 (please note there will be an Easter break with no class on 14/4)
Featuring unique antique garments & accessories from The Darnell Collection
In this course students identify significant design styles that mark fashion eras of the twentieth century and the turning points that helped create fashion change. From the corsetry and crinolines of the late C19th, through the glamour and upheaval of the past one hundred years, students will explore key fashion designers, such as Vionnet, Christian Dior and Versace, and their signature design influences. Students will be able to examine antique and vintage couture garments, developing an understanding of the ways in which fabric and construction are affected by available technologies and materials, social mores and economics. Ways in which the history of design influences contemporary designers are explored. (see important information below)
This is a must for would be designers and those who want to get up close and personal with extraordinary vintage designer pieces!

Contemporary Fashion Drawing (8 week program, Tuesdays 6 - 8pm) Commencing 3rd March, tuition $350
In this course students are introduced to the fundamentals of fashion drawing, its applications in contemporary fashion and a range of rendering techniques. They explore the proportions and stylised features of the female fashion figure, drawing a range of fashion poses and garment styles. Students apply pencil and marker rendering techniques, as used in the fashion industry, to visually communicate a variety of fabrics and design details. Current trends in fashion illustration styles and influential work of past fashion illustrators are considered for technique and style variations. (see important information below)
Required Equipment: Set of 6 marker pens, 2B pencil, 0.2 & 0.04 Black Artline Pen, set of 12 Aquarelle colour pencils, rubber, sharpener, A3 bleed proof pad
Digital Fashion Drawing (8 week program, Tuesdays 6 – 8pm)
Commencing 5th May, tuition $350
In this course students are able to apply fashion drawing skills to develop digital fashion drawings. Students apply digital and manual fashion drawing methods, scanning their drawings, fashion figure templates and fabric swatches to create fashion drawings using the latest digital software packages. A range of digital rendering tools and image manipulation techniques are applied to illustrations of a range of fashion designs and fashion figures, including male and female figures. It is desirable for students to have access to digital design applications outside of class time to work on their drawings.
