Housing affordability is deteriorating rapidly in Melbourne's outer suburbs with the price of a new housing lot up 17 per cent in the first six months of the year.
The median price of a standard housing lot hit a new record high of $283,000 in June compared with $241,000 in January, according to research by project marketers Red23.
The growth in lot prices is more than double the rise in Melbourne house prices over the first six months of the year (up 7.5 per cent, according to Fairfax-owned Domain) and nearly nine times the current rate of annual wages growth.
If lot prices continue to rise at this rate, the median lot price will exceed $320,000 by the end of the year, lifting the cost of a basic house-and-land package to more than $500000
