went out of your way - means you have gone beyond your duty to help someone out.

This sounds like a typical interview question. I'd use a real life example where I did help someone out even though that's beyond my job responsibilities. If you don't have a real one, just make something up.

go out of your way to do something = to do something with more effort than is usual or expected

for example, we can say "When I first got here, he went out of his way to make me feel welcome."
