“Possibly the best Milford sound tour !”
clip_image001Reviewed 19 April 2015 NEW
The weather was unfortunately not in our favor but Ray made the tour so fun that we enjoyed every minute of it !
On our way to Milford Sound, we stopped at various places with unbelievable beautiful scenary/ backdrop of the Fiordland National Park. Despite of the gloomy day (as the storm was coming), my camera was in for a treat.
What I love most about this tour is:
- Small group (no more than 15!) that it almost felt like a private tour
- Ray partnered with a small business owner who made delicious scones and lunches and that is a personal touch for me :)
- Lovely stop-over for morning tea
- Ray explained a lot about the town Te Anau, history of Fiordland/ Milford Sound
- Ray never really rushed us , though some of us took a bit longer as we were busy clicking our cameras away
I would highly recommend anyone to join Ray on his Milford Sound tour :)

“THE way to do Milford Sound”
clip_image001[1]Reviewed 5 November 2014 NEW
Based on Tripadvisor Recommendations -me, my wife and 12 year old son did the Milford Sound trip with Ray. Ray is incredibly knowledgeable about the area and very helpful as well. He patiently answered my endless questions on email before the trip, and gave me some very handy advice that was useful for the other parts of our holiday in NZ as well.
The normal way that most tourists do Milford Sound is - take a morning bus from Queenstown around 7am, 6 hour drive to Milford with a few stops, then 1 hr 45 min cruise, then 5 hour ride back. That makes for a very long day. The infinitely better way, is to arrive in Te Anau a day earlier, and then leave with Fiordland Tours in a small group at around 8:30 am from Te Anau. Though it is only120 km to Milford, the trip takes almost 5 hours because of the numerous stops -- we did 15 -- at all the scenic points along the way. These are described in other posts below so will not repeat except to say that the scones served were the best I had eaten in NZ. Ray is very handy with the camera as well, and took some lovely shots of us. The cruise then became the icing on the cake.
On the way back, as per Ray's recommendation we took the fixed wing flight back to Te Anau. At NZD 330 per adult for a 1 hour flight over 8 different sounds - Milford, Sutherland, Bligh, Charles, Nancy, Doubtful and a couple of others --- it was a bargain and also the trip of a lifetime. Many of these sounds are absolutely un-inhabited and the only way to see them was by air. We reached back to Te Anau at around 5pm, after a wonderful day which was one of the highlights of our NZ Trip.
Also we stayed with Ray at Birchwood cottages, so we got a discount on the Cruise. Win Win situation!!
Thanks Ray and Leonie!

...by booking with Fiordland Private Tours.
Spoke with Ray on the phone about the fiordland tour and was so impressed that we booked a stay at his Birchwood Cottages.
First, the "Milford Sound Fiordland Extraordinaire" tour: Fantastic! The comfortable, fifteen-passenger transport is small enough to get into out-of-the-way places. Ray is chock-full of fiordland information and is funny, witty and charming, and he thoughtfully answers questions. (The chocolates awarded for correct answers to his trivia challenges are a hoot, too!) The boat tour of Milford Sound was beautiful.
Second, the Birchwood Cottages: Perfect! Warm, comfortable, stocked with everything a guest needs. Couldn't have asked for better.
It felt as though we were going to have five-star service from Fiordland Private Tours--and we were wrong. It deserves ten stars!
