Most likely what soslaugh has from the employer is the remote area housing benefit. If the employee lives and works in a remote area, the rent will be exempt from the fringe benefit tax. That means the employee can salary packaging the rent and the rent will become income tax free.
However, even if it is the case, the employee can not claim work-related deduction at own tax return time as the packaged rent expenses are paid by the employer effectively so no income tax deduction.
LAFHA is another type of fringe benefit, the only type of benefits by way of an allowance. However, the employee should not have LAFHA as part of assessable income therefore also no income tax deduction allowed. |
