在刚刚结束的国际奥林匹克数学竞赛中,澳洲选手获得佳绩:

Young Aussies return triumphant from
55th International Mathematical Olympiad

Our team brings home Gold with Australia’s first perfect score and a first place individual ranking.
Australia’s six-member secondary school student team excelled at the 2014 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 to 13 July. The star of the Australian team was 17-year-old Alexander Gunning, who was one of only three in the world to attain a perfect score, Australia’s first IMO perfect score and best individual ranking result. He shared first place with students from China and Taiwan.  Alex is a returning medallist. In 2013 he won his first gold medal and was individually ranked 8th, while in his first attempt the previous year he won a bronze medal.

Competing against more than 500 contestants from 101 countries, the 2014 Australian team brings home one gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Our team improved Australia’s ranking from 15th last year to 11th position overall with 156 points, just one mark outside the top ten.

Hosted by a different country each year, the annual UNESCO-sanctioned IMO is  the premier international competition in mathematics for secondary school students globally. It began in 1959 and is the oldest, largest and most prestigious of the International Science Olympiads.

The Australian team members and their results are:

Registrations for the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) close Friday 25 July.

Event date: 9 August

Alexander Gunning entered his first AMC in Year 4. His results ensured that the promise of his potential was identified and supported.

The problem solving approach promoted by the AMC helps students discover an enjoyment of mathematics and is a springboard for discussion in the classroom.

It is not too late to give your students the opportunity to challenge themselves by entering the 2014 Australian Mathematics Competition sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank.

天才从小就是天才!!!

Perfect scores add up for maths genius Alex
     August 10, 2013

When Alex Gunning achieved a perfect score in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad in February, people were understandably amazed by the year 10 student.

When the 16-year-old doubled down with a similarly unblemished effort (and first place finish) in the more challenging Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad in March, they were suitably astounded. But when the young whiz from Glen Waverley Secondary College topped those performances last month, winning a gold medal and finishing eighth in the world at the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad in Colombia, the only reaction left for anyone who knew him was pride.

From three years old onwards he was extremely able. He got perfect scores all the time - he just always got everything right.

Pride and happiness.

''From three years old onwards he was extremely able,'' his mother, Hannah Cooper, said. ''He got perfect scores all the time - he just always got everything right. He was so gifted, and when he wins a prize it makes people happy. He's just so pleased.''

Alex himself said he was ''fairly surprised … I didn't think I would do that well''. Of course, there are those who did, including his school principal, Gerry Schiller.

'We all knew well in advance of Alex arriving on our doorstep in year 7 that he was a child of exceptional talents,'' he said. ''He's not the sort of boy that you could just stick in a year 7 maths class, because he wouldn't learn much. There's something happening in Alex's head that doesn't happen in most people's heads.''

The school created a maths enhancement group for Alex and a few others, and arranged a mentor from Monash University. The Australian Mathematics Trust also nurtures his ability, including helping Alex and other secondary school students prepare for the Olympiad - facing off against teenagers from 97 countries in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation-sanctioned pinnacle of mathematical competition - a two-day, six-question battle royale.

Angelo Di Pasquale of the University of Melbourne is Australia's team leader at the Olympiad, and notes that while some prodigies practise and grind their way to greatness, Alex has flair. ''He's quite a deep thinker. Usually, he doesn't have that much rough work - you can see a lot of it is going on his mind,'' Dr Di Pasquale said.

Alex's gold medal performance and eighth place finish was ''a big deal'', given that the Chinese, Americans, Russians and South Koreans usually ''gobble up all the golds''.

Dr Di Pasquale pointed to question six of the competition, which perhaps a dozen people in the world were able to solve. Alex was among them.

''When I saw his work, I spent hours trying to understand it,'' he said. ''I needed extra time. The local markers in Colombia couldn't work it out either, and they needed extra time. But when we got around to it, it was right. He was right. The rest of the Australian team couldn't score a point on it.''

For Alex, the highlight was something more mundane but perhaps meaningful, too - the chance to meet like-minded peers from all over the world in an idyllic setting. ''It was quite nice to be with people who had familiarity with these concepts.''

For anyone wishing to compete with this genial young number cruncher, a scary thought emerges. ''He's only in year 10,'' Dr Di Pasquale said. ''If he doesn't want to hang up the boots, he's got next year and the year after to get better.''
