Thank you for your email.  This is an automated response.  Please read the following information carefully.  If the information in regards to your query is contained below, you will not receive a reply.  We aim to reply to all other queries as soon as possible.

General Information

All Parent visa applications are processed at the Parent Visa Centre (PVC) in Western Australia.

Information about Parent migration is in booklet number 3 – Parent Migration.  We strongly recommend that you read this booklet before applying for a visa. This booklet can be obtained for free from our website http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/books3.htm

Further information regarding Parent Migration is also available on our website http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/31parents.htm

Application Lodgement and Processing

All parent visa applications are required to be lodged at the Parent Visa Centre by post. Our postal address is Locked Bag 7, Northbridge, Western Australia 6865. If you are sending your application by courier our address is Level 4, Wellington Central, 836 Wellington Street, West Perth, Western Australia 6005.

There is currently a 4-5 month backlog in sending out acknowledgement letters.  Applications are considered based on the lodgement date and the delay in registering an application will not affect the processing time for a decision on the application.

Processing occurs in stages and a deduction of visa application charge is a sign that visa processing is occurring.  Once your application is registered, an acknowledgement letter will be sent to you or your authorised recipient. To confirm receipt of your application within this 4-5 month period, refer to the postal or courier service used to lodge your application.

If you wish for further information regarding the lodgement of your application, please provide us with the following information:

·         The postal tracking number of your application and the date it was received by the department.

·         The full name and date of birth of all applicants.

·         Passport numbers of all applicants.

Please note that a manual search of an application make take several days to complete if it has not been registered in departmental systems.

There is currently an 8 week backlog in processing extra documents from applicants.  Sending us early e-mails asking us whether we have received your documents will not speed the process up.

To protect your privacy, we cannot provide any information about your application to any other person, including your sponsor, unless you provide a Form 956 authorising us to do so.

Processing times for Contributory Parent Visas

Due to the high volume of applications received, it is currently taking approximately 19 months from receiving an application for a contributory parent visa application to be assessed. The current processing date is 02 July 2012.  When your application is allocated to a case officer for assessment, they will contact you or your authorised recipient to advise the next stage of processing. Prior to this stage the department will not be in contact and will not confirm receipt of individual documents.

Please note that due to the volume of documents received, we are unable to confirm receipt of documents.  If you require confirmation that documents have been received by the department, please send your documents by registered mail or courier. This will enable you to monitor receipt of documents with the Post Officer or Courier company.

Processing times for Non Conributory Parent Visas

The current processing time for a subclass 103 application to achieve a queue date is approximately 9 months.  Please bear this in mind when applying for any long-term visitor visas that require a queue date.

Please note that the Parent Queue Calculator is currently not functioning correctly.  The issue has been raised with our IT department and they are working to have it fixed as soon as possible.  For your information, we are currently assessing subclass 103 parent visa applications with a queue date from December 2007 and subclass 804 applications with a queue date from January 2008.  If you wish to obtain your current position in the queue, you will need to send an email to parents@immi.gov.au and include your visa subclass and your queue date.  Parent Visa subclass 103 and 804 applications are assessed in date order of lodgement.  If you are found to satisfy the core criteria for the queuing of the visa application, you will be allocated a queue date and placed in a queue to await your turn for finalisation of the application.

Once your application is in the queue there may be a substantial amount of time before you are contacted again by the department. This could be in excess of 10 years depending on the availability of visa places. Queue dates cannot be changed or brought forward.

Please note that the queue date is not the same as the lodgement date. The lodgement date, is the date when your parent visa application was received, while the queue date, is when the Case Officer (after initial assessment) places the parent visa application in a waiting list.

The electronic queue date calculator only indicates the number of persons ahead in the queue for Parent Visa subclasses 103 and 804.  If you have applied for Contributory Parent Visa subclasses 173, 143, 864 or 884, the electronic queue date calculator will not show you any information.

If you have applied for a Parent Visa, you may also wish to consider switching to a Contributory Parent visa as there are considerably more visa places available and are processed quicker.

Differences between Contributory Parent and Parent Visas

There are a number of categories available for parent migration. These fall under two broad headings – the Contributory Parent Visa category and the Parent Visa category. Contributory Parent Visas are subclasses 143, 174, 864 and 884.  Parent Visas are subclasses 103 and 804.

There are more visa places in the contributory parent visa category than in the parent visa category.  There are a very limited number of places available in the parent visa category and processing of these visas can be lengthy.

Apart from a substantially higher second Visa Application Charge and Assurance of Support bond, the criteria for the contributory parent visas are generally the same as for the parent visa.

Within each of the contributory parent and parent visa categories there are visa classes for parent applicants of any age residing outside Australia.  There are also visa classes for aged parent applicants who are currently in Australia.  Please refer to booklet number 3 for further information http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/books3.htm

Assurance of Support (AOS) and Medicare

If you have a query relating to another government agency, please contact the relevant agency direct. Assurance of Support is processed by Centrelink and Medicare handles queries relating to health assistance. Our Department does not determine the eligibility for Medicare benefits.

Changes to circumstances

If your circumstances or contact details have changed since your application was lodged, you must inform the Parent Visa Centre in writing. Please email parents@immi.gov.au or complete form 1022 from our website, www.immi.gov.au.

Traveling outside of Australia with a current onshore application

If you have a current onshore application and wish to travel outside of Australia, you will need to apply for a Bridging Visa “B”. Please complete Form 1006 available from the department website. Please attend your closest immigration office with this form, passport and payment.
