Makeup matters,
The problem is that 80% of the show is incredibly funny Australian humour. 15% of the show is slightly racist and 5% of the show is incredibly racist.
The problem for Australia is what does it say about us if we are prepared to accept a show like this? Does the 80% funny Australian humour counter act the 5% incredibly racist humour?
In the US, one racist joke and a show would be off the air. And this doesn't take into account that much of the US would not be able to appreciate much of the 80% of incredibly funny Australian humour. No wonder the people in the US are switching off.
In Australia we recently had the Adam Goodes race discussion which talks about the offence caused by these type of comments. And we have another show on another channel with people from other ethnic backgrounds making fun of white people. Do we not get it? I will say it again, in the US, one racist joke and a show would be off the air. |
