A DECISION about where 15-year-old Roland Warner should go to school was settled by the My School website last week.
His father, Peter, was set on sending Roland to an elite Sydney private school until Roland produced school rankings taken from the federal government's My Schools website to argue his case for staying at his selective high school.
In a letter to the editor, Roland said the school rankings, which placed Normanhurst Boys High School 14th in the state, had helped him convince his father against taking him out of the school.
''My dad was about to pull me out of Normanhurst Boys High School and send me to a posh expensive private school. But with The Sydney Morning Herald list, I was able to convince him not to send me to a worse school,'' he wrote.

''Students of good schools deserve to be told that they are at one of the top schools in the state. Parents have had the wool pulled over their eyes for too long. Ivy-covered buildings and a well-watered oval do not make a good school.''
Roland's father, who is an architect, said he and his wife, Zhang Dao Hua, a medical doctor, had been keen on sending his son to the private school.
Mr Warner said Roland had attended another private primary school but left because ''he said he didn't want to be around rich dumb kids''.
''I've been overruled,'' he said.
''He is a strong-willed person and he thinks about things very carefully.''
Roland said that the private school he attended during his primary years had ''very good facilities, but the other kids weren't particularly bright''. ''I liked the resources, but I've come to realise that being around good students who are roughly at my level is better than having good facilities.''
After completing the Higher School Certificate, Roland said he would like to study medicine or law or go into a construction business.
