Putting the brakes on fakes: Ten arrested during police blitz on Chinatown markets
Saturday, 19 Feb 2011 05:40am
Police have arrested 10 people and seized a large cache of counterfeit fashion products allegedly sold at markets in Sydney’s Chinatown.
Officers from the City Central Local Area Command last night conducted Operation Blackbird, targeting a number of stalls at the night markets in the Haymarket area.
Uniformed police, detectives and members of the command’s proactive crime team joined staff from Trademark Investigation Services and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in a sweep through the market district.
Police sealed off a number of stalls suspected of selling counterfeit goods including clothing, watches, jewellery, handbags and sunglasses. Up to six thousand items were seized.
They allegedly seized counterfeit products bearing brand names such as Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Prada and Jimmy Choo.
Stall holders and staff were detained for visa checks by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Those arrested over the alleged counterfeit sales were issued with Field Court Attendance Notices and charged with a range of offences including possess and Expose Goods with Falsely Applied Trade Mark (Trade Marks Act 1995.
They were ordered to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday 5 April 2011.
City Central Crime Manager, Chris Craner, said the operation followed surveillance by police and Trademark Investigation Services experts working on behalf of the international fashion companies.
“We have put stallholders on notice…the sale of fake, trademarked products is a crime,” Detective Inspector Craner said.
“Retailers selling counterfeit goods help perpetuate the myth that it’s okay to buy such products,” he added, “It is theft, pure and simple.”
“The sale of fake fashion items robs legitimate businesses of millions of dollars worldwide and often the illegal profits are diverted into other criminal enterprises,” Inspector Craner said.
