Private schools used for cultural quarantine

PARENTS are using private schools to segregate their children from unfamiliar cultures, new research shows.



An academic paper published in The Australian Economic Review shows Australian-born parents in areas with high migrant populations are more likely to send their children to private schools than Australian-born parents in areas with lower immigrant rates.

First-generation migrants in areas where there are more migrant children of the same ethnic background are less likely to send their children to private schools.

Advertisement: Story continues below The paper, by Australian National University fellow Astghik Mavisakalyan, shows the trend is highest among secondary students.

Dr Mavisakalyan found that at primary school, a 10 per cent increase in the proportion of immigrants increased the probability of Australian-born children attending private schools by 3.5 percentage points. This compared with 6.45 percentage points at the secondary-school level.

She said the findings were statistically significant, adding: ''Overall, the results suggest the possibility of a flight from unfamiliar cultures in the Australian school system.

''I considered cultural differences between natives and immigrants based on shared language and ethnic background [and] in both cases, it appears that the private-school attendance of native-born Australians increases in response to immigrants from distant cultures.''

Dr Mavisakalyan used 2001 census data for her work, which warned that the trend could lead to school segregation.

The recent government-commissioned Gonski review of school funding found a lack of English proficiency was one of five factors that significantly affected students' performances.

A spokeswoman for Multicultural Affairs Minister Kate Lundy said: ''Parents select a school for a variety of different reasons and they are increasingly making informed choices using the My School website.''

This is sad, but true. They aren't just protecting them from other cultures, in these areas, they are also trying to shelter them from the freedom to make their own choices. Unfortunately, they are also denying them the great breadth of knowledge they can gain from the exchange with other cultures. They are denying them life experience, which ultimately will leave them small minded.

Wow, you deduced this from the article? We live is a high immigrant area and send our kids to the local private school, and guess what? The schools is filled will 1st and 2nd generation migrants from the local area. So much for missing out on the exchange of cultures. Their friends are from a multitude of backgrounds.

Gee, the author of this study clearly hasn't set foot in a private school if they think this is true. Do they seriously think that private schools are a bastion of white bread and vegemite sandwiches? *looks around private school I know* Let me see... Chinese students (from China as well as Australian born), Indonesian students, Malaysian students, Indian students, Korean students, Taiwanese students, German students French students, British students, American students, Japanese students, Middle Eastern students, Somali students, Aboriginal students, deaf students, blind students... and that's just the ones I know about!

I would say that the reason parents send their kids to private schools has more to do with curriculum and discipline than not wanting to be around other cultures because it's patently untrue that private schools are devoid of other cultures. In fact, they're full of them!

What a croc. As if parents would willingly spend 1000's of dollars more to send themselves to a private school. If the local public school was worth it, then almost always they would choose the cheaper school over the expensive school.

Just look at how difficult it is to get into the govie schools that are worthy. Parents are falling over themselves to get into them, even lying about where they live just so they fall into the zone.

It is because most public school have a not good to bad reputation that forces parents to go down the private path.

To me, the issue of public vs. private schools has more to do with class than multiculturalism. Well connected parents will prefer the private option.

The aspirationals will go for anything which brings them status.

This is why the state school system has suffered so much. The Kath and Kym brigade think the private schools will give them more status and the government has subsidised this way of thinking, directly weakening the state system.

They don't understand that a good state school system (as in Finland, France and Germany) saves everyone money as there is no need for private schools and builds a much more prosperous society.

After all, little Johnny or Jilly cannot build a society by themselves. Their wealth will depend on the common wealth of the entire society but there seems to be an inability for most to see beyond the microscopic picture in this area.

It will be bequeathing phenomenal social problems as the social legacy and should be recognised now.
