JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the IT Infrastructure and Operations Manager the successful candidate will be part of a team of 6 engineers. As one of the four senior engineers in the team the successful candidate will be expected to be a technical expert/leader in the Windows Active Directory/Exchange area and strong in several others. They should be a dynamic, self-starter with enthusiasm and passion for technology both inside and outside of work. They need to have rigorous attention to detail and be driven to improve upon systems they are responsible for.
Australian Unity has a medium sized IT department and as such, may not have as rigorous processes as candidates from larger organisations may be used to. If a process doesn’t exist then as a senior technical resource this person should be able to work out a suitable approach with minimal guidance and then document this as a new procedure. Where processes do exist the successful applicant should seek to make themselves aware of them and comply. High level technical documentation skills are mandatory and a KPI will be the production of professional level documentation.
The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a busy environment where they will be required to juggle and constantly re-prioritise many competing tasks. These will include a mixture of internal consultancy, day to day system administration, operations support, monitoring, backup administration, server builds, incident support and project work as required. Being on-call (24x7) is a requirement of the position. This requires carrying a pager on a rostered basis for one week in six and is remunerated in addition to base package.
As a senior resource the person in this role should be able to work with minimal supervision and be able to seek out information on systems and processes as required. They should also be a team player, always willing to assist and mentor other staff as required. Specifically, as a Senior Engineer it is expected that the successful candidate will run training sessions periodically to cross-train other team members and share their knowledge so they need to be an effective communicator.
This role requires someone who has a keen ‘engineering’ mind with very strong problem solving, troubleshooting and critical thinking skills. We are not looking for someone who just follows the manual – we are looking for someone who knows why the manual was written that way and can explain the pros and cons of other approaches.
