PIPI THIEVES NABBED AT VENUS BAY
A total of five people will be charged with fisheries offences after Fisheries Officers allegedly found them over the past week at Venus Bay with several times the legal limit of pipis.
A 55 year old man from Ringwood and a 44 year old man from Ringwood North, along with two children, were allegedly caught with 66 litres of the shellfish in their possession.
In addition to this, a husband and wife from Mordialloc were allegedly detected with a total of 33 litres of live pipis.
A 40 year old man, also from Mordialloc, allegedly had a further 21 litres of live pipis.
All three matters are likely to be heard at the Korrumburra Magistrates’ Court.
The daily catch limit for pipis at Venus Bay is two litres per person in the shell or half a litre of pipi meat.
Fisheries Officers from Yarram found the three groups over separate days about three kilometres to the east of Venus Bay beach during ongoing inspections being conducted in
the area as part of Operation Arch.
Excess pipi’s were seized and later returned to the water.
Senior Fisheries Officer at Yarram, Ian Carroll said the vast majority of recreational pipi collectors at Venus Bay abided by the regulations.
“However Fisheries Officers will continue to be active in this area throughout the rest of summer in order to maintain good levels of compliance,” Mr Carroll said.
“We will not hesitate to prosecute those people who contravene the regulations.
“Unless you have an exemption, people are required to have a current recreational fishing licence and can only use their hands and feet to take pipis.”
