It is a sad story. We still couldn’t believe it happened to us, but it’s totally TRUE! I’ll never ever expect it to happen to my loved ones or come with the joy of my newborn baby.
My wife and I both love children so much and been expecting to have our own child for long time. My wife had a history of 3 miscarriages and suffered a lot both from her body and from her heart. We were so over the moon when we knew this pregnancy was successful and our little angel from the God brought so much joy to the family. To avoid miscarriage again, she restricted to stay at home mostly the first 5 month and been extra cautious for the whole 9 month pregnancy period.
The big day finally came! She was on labour the 26th June 2010. We didn’t think that’s the last time she can move freely and walk! Her labour was long, painful and with complications. After serious consideration, we decided to use epidural which has been demonstrated to be a very mature medical procedure and used on millions of people for different operations. We totally trust the anaesthetist as we know she must have at least 8 years training to be qualified to do the job.
However, with the fully trust from the whole family, she made the world’s biggest ever mistake in epidural history to inject Chlorhexidine (the skin cleansing and preparation solution) into my wife’s epidural space instead of the anaesthetics. She used the wrong bottle on the table! They have different colours to distinct from each other but she still injected poison to my wife’s spine!
My wife had been paralysed since then. We were not told about the mistake until 3 days later by the hospital when we found she had no feelings at all on her lower body! It means the doctors lose the first opportunity to rectify the enormous mistake the first place. Excuses have been given and the anaesthetist only came and visited us 4 days later after the incident. She explained that the blood on the needle caused from the first attempt contaminated the Chlorhexidine, so she mistaken it as anaesthetics.
My wife has had 2 major brain operations to remove fluid in the brain which is one of the adverse effects from the wrong chemical used. After days, the Chlorhexidine had been circulated within the nerve system and definitely gone to the brain tissues. She’s been transferred into the high dependency unit (HDU) and nobody can tell us clearly what will happen to her in the future. The doctors had no experience to this case at all and they don’t know what to do to rectify the problem. They are still looking for solutions from all sought of resources.
My poor baby had never left the hospital since coming to the world. He has never tasted mum’s breast milk even my wife has a strong belief in breast feeding. We have been pumping milk out to maintain the supply, but we couldn’t give the milk to my son as my wife is currently using too many drugs.
She stayed on bed all the time, most of time sleeping. She couldn’t walk, couldn’t move even couldn’t sit for couple of hours without vomiting. When our friends came to visit her, she was very happy and trying to talk but couldn’t stop falling sleep again – actually it’s caused by the in-balance of her brain.
We believe more people should know about our story. We really hope anybody who had any experience in this kind of cases can give us a hand to save my wife, save the baby and save the whole family!
