Saturday, 29 May 2010 01:46am
Police believe a man who was swept off rocks at Kiama late yesterday was rock fishing.
Just after 6.20pm, police from the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command were called to the headland at Friars Cave following reports a man had been swept off rocks into the water.
Police, Kiama Surf Life Saving Association jet boat and Ambulance rescue helicopter, ambulance paramedics and State Emergency Service volunteers immediately commenced a search of the area, with the jet boat crew locating the man in the ocean off the headland.
The 41-year-old man, from South Strathfield, was brought to shore where emergency workers tried in vain to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the incident and believe the man was rock fishing with two friends when he was washed into the water by a wave.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Inspector Steven Johnson from the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command said that with inclement weather expected in the coming days, people should exercise extreme caution in coastal areas.
“Whilst the circumstances of the man’s death are still being investigated and police will be preparing a report for the Coroner, I do want get the message out to recreational fisherman – please don’t put your life on the line, fish safely,” Inspector Johnson said. |
