UPDATE, 23 September 2021, 2pm: Audi Australia has confirmed the new 2022 Audi S3 will arrive in showrooms in early 2022, rather than late 2021 as initially expected.
Further details have also been released, which have been added to this story, which continues below.
23 September 2021, 11am: The 2022 Audi S3 Sportback and sedan will arrive in Australia in early 2022, priced from just under $70,000 before on-road costs.
One highly-specified variant of Audi's new go-fast small car will reach showrooms priced from $69,900 before on-road costs for the Sportback hatch, or $72,400 for the sedan – increases of $5700 and $6600 over the outgoing S3 hatch and sedan, nudging the drive-away price close to $80,000.
However, there's a range of new technologies on offer with the new-generation model, along with an uprated engine: an evolution of the outgoing S3's 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, developing 228kW and 400Nm.
Those numbers match the full outputs offered in Europe, rather than detuned 'hot weather' figures for the Australian market, as applied to the outgoing 213kW/380Nm S3. They also make the new S3 the most powerful A3 on offer until the new RS3's arrival in the first half of 2022.
Drive is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard, translating to a 4.8-second claimed 0-100km/h time, and a 250km/h electronically-limited top speed. Combined claimed fuel consumption for the S3 hatch sits at 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres – up over the previous car's 6.7L/100km – while the S3 sedan claims 7.3L/100km.
