While Magellan holds shares in global powerhouses such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, Douglass made a more local splash in the industry when Magellan announced last December it was investing $86.8m to buy a 10 per cent stake in the Mexican chain Guzman y Gomez.

That deal is part of a small shift to buying unlisted assets, including putting $155m into new investment bank Barrenjoey late last year and $20m in an infrastructure-based fintech.

t Magellan’s annual general meeting last Monday, Douglass sought to justify his Alibaba booboo. “If you get on the wrong side of the Communist Party, you’re going to find out you’re on the wrong side, there is no other alternative. Jack Ma found out, which was very painful for us in the last year,” Hamish lamented with characteristic levels of empathy.

“We made the assumption he would act in his own personal interests but I was wrong on that. Now he’s going to be effectively imprisoned in China for the rest of his life and have no public profile, which has been a very costly mistake for Jack.”

The very next day, The South China Morning Post – which is owned by Alibaba – reported that “Alibaba founder Jack Ma is in Europe for a series of business meetings.”

The Financial Times followed on Wednesday: “Jack Ma is holidaying in Spain, according to two people familiar with his travel plans, marking the Chinese internet tycoon’s first confirmed trip outside China since he ran foul of the country’s financial regulators late last year. The Hong Kong-traded shares of Alibaba, Ma’s e-commerce group, rose as much as 9.2 per cent on Wednesday.”

Magellan Financial Group Ltd (ASX: MFG)

A note out of UBS reveals that its analysts have retained their sell rating but lifted their price target on this fund manager’s shares slightly to $29.50. This follows the release of Magellan’s latest funds under management update. UBS continues to see risks to fund outflows and pressure on its fees. Particularly given the ongoing underperformance of its global fund. The Magellan share price is fetching $35.19 today.

In Morningstar’s quarterly outlook released on Friday, the firm underlined Magellan and Pendal as its top picks in the financial services sector.

Morningstar analyst Shaun Ler said Magellan’s portfolio holdings were undervalued relative to the broader global equities asset class, and he sees upside to the fund manager’s earnings as its principal investments in Barrenjoey, Guzman Y Gomez and FinClear turn profitable.

Morningstar sees fair value for Magellan at $50.50 compared to its current share price of $29.08.

Late on Monday, influential funds research firm Morningstar said ratings on Magellan’s global ETF and high conviction funds would remain unchanged, but said it would conduct a scheduled review of Magellan in the first quarter of 2022.

Hamish Douglass, the co-founder and chairman of under-siege fund manager Magellan Financial Group, has hit back at speculation that his marital separation could adversely affect the company’s unitholders or shareholders.

“People have tried to create an image that my wife and I [are going through] some nasty divorce – nothing could be further from the truth,” Mr Douglass told Magellan’s head of institutional sales, Matthew Webb, in the recorded interview.

“My wife and I remain incredibly close. Actually, we spend a lot of time sharing a house together. We’re spending the whole Christmas holidays together.”
