Continued transmission of the Delta variant coronavirus strain has more than quadrupled the average daily number of confirmed cases of coronary disease in the United States from a month ago, to the highest level since mid-february. About a fifth of the new cases are in Florida, the state that has become the new epicenter of the outbreak. An average of 72,493 new cases a day were reported in the seven days ending Friday, according to data released Saturday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By contrast, the seven-day average of 13,424 confirmed cases as of June 30 has been rising since mid-june. The United States reported 101,171 new confirmed cases on Friday, the highest number in a single day since Feb. 7. There were 451 new deaths and a seven-day average of 308, the highest since early and mid-june. |
