Kate Finnie There are problems with the new curriculum in that students are not supposed to sit tests during the year (I think also year 11). In the area I am in this is being followed to a T, though I have heard rumours some schools have ignored the directive. It is really concerning because this means the students have not had practice and experience sitting tests that ask similar questions in exam conditions. This also means students do not have the 'trial and error' experience of learning how to improve their study technique. It is quite concerning.
Nick Grant Advanced English student here - I found that the essay question was rather difficult and had limited to no applicability to our school’s prescribed text; genuinely made me wonder whether or not the people who wrote the question had actually read The Crucible. The question asked us about how love was explored in this play - not exactly a very prominent theme in a play about witchcraft and persecution.
The short answer questions were a bit more approachable but I was a bit unpleasantly surprised to find that all of the unseen texts were rather long literary pieces - I definitely ran out of time in this section, largely because it took a while to read the entirety of the text and even longer to comprehend it.
Overall I just wish we either had more time or the questions were more relaxed. It seemed that the focus of each question was rather narrow and didn’t allow for much scope of thought. |
