1. Cumberland State Forest
Where: 95 Castle Hill Rd, West Pennant Hills
Cumberland State Forest has 40 ha of native forest. Discover a range of birds and wildlife during one of the many trail walk options, from the 30-minute Sensory Trail to the 1.3km Forestry Trail, or join up with the Great North Walk, which runs from Sydney to Newcastle. Refuel at Cafe Saligna or peruse the on-site nursery. Picnic and barbecue areas are also available.
2. Hunts Creek Reserve
WHERE: Parkland Dr, Carlingford
The reserve is home to the beautiful Balaka Falls waterfall. There are a number of ways to get to the waterfall, from Parkland Rd, Carlingford, all the way to Northam Drive in North Rocks. The reserve includes a shared path for cyclists and walkers so feel free to bring the bikes. Once on the track, signs will point to the waterfall. There are a number of walking trail options, ranging up to 2.5km.
3. Bidjigal Reserve
Where: Baulkham Hills
With more than 140 native animals and 370 native plants, the Bidjigal Reserve has plenty to see. Keen-eyed walkers can spot the Powerful Owl, Eastern Bentwing (a microbat), Grey-headed Flying Fox and The Eastern Water Dragon, or Bidjiwong. The reserve, which is almost two square km, includes a number of walking trails of different lengths, some of which join onto the Great North Walk. Named after the Bidjigal people who lived in the area, the reserve is also home to a number of Aboriginal rock shelters and includes a long section of the Darling Mills Creek. The reserve can be accessed from North Rocks, Northmead, Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill, West Pennant Hills or Carlingford.

Fagan Park
Where: 38-48 Arcadia Rd, Galston
The 55-hectare Fagan Park includes a picnic and barbecue area, a short bushwalking trail, two playgrounds and large open areas perfect for playing. The park is home to the Gardens of Many Nations, 10-hectares of gardens featuring plants from around the globe. The Rural Museum is open every Tuesday from 10am-4pm or every second Sunday of the month. Take a look around the original Fagan family homestead, Netherby Cottage, or the Rural Museum. The lake is the perfect spot to relax with a coffee from the coffee cart to watch the ducks, swans and fishes. Two carparks are available, one off Arcadia Rd at the main park entrance, and another off Carrs Rd, and parking costs $5 per vehicle.
5. Fagan Park Eco Garden, Galston.
Heritage Trail
Where: Baulkham Hills
This 6km trail takes walkers through the history of Baulkham Hills. Follow the bollards with the Heritage Trail logo and signs to be guided through the trail, which includes Alfred Henry Whaling Reserve, Torry Burn Reserve, Sophia Doyle Reserve, William Joyce Reserve, Crestwood Reserve and MacKillop Drive Reserve. The trail can be accessed from a number of points around Baulkham Hills.
6. Richard Webb Reserve
WHERE:West Pennant Hills
This reserve is home to a beautiful waterfall. Stroll along the reserve, walk below the sandstone cliffs or climb up to the sandstone ridge. Enter off Aiken Road or Heidi Place. The Hills Shire Council host guided walks through the reserve as well as many of the other walking trails in the area.
7. Berowra Valley National Park
WHERE:Join in at Galston or Cherrybrook.
There are more than 70km of walking tracks and trails in the Berowra Valley National Park, from short options to a 25km stretch of the Great North Walk. Start at the Galston Gorge picnic area and enjoy the views of Berowra Creek or start at Lakes Reserve, Cherrybrook, and complete the 5.1km Callicoma Walk.

Fred Caterson Reserve
Where: Castle Hill
Follow the path from Fred Caterson Reserve to Castle Hill Heritage Park for a scenic walk through Castle Hill and views of Cattai Creek. Start at the Gilbert Rd entrance to Fred Caterson and follow the signs. Or, stay on the 3.5km track around Fred Caterson Reserve, which takes about 75 minutes to complete.
9. The Great North Road
Where: Wiseman’s Ferry
Start at Devine’s Hill and wander along The Great North Rd. The trail was built by convicts from sandstone during 1826-1834s, an extraordinary engineering feat. The trail includes many significant sites including Clares Bridge, the second oldest bridge in mainland Australia. While you’re in Wiseman’s Ferry check out the oldest bridge, on Wisemans Ferry Rd near the start of Devines Hill. Signs will point out highlights along the way.
10. Crestwood Reserve
Where: Cnr of Crestwood Drive and Chapel Lane, Baulkham Hills
The reserve features a range of walking paths, as well as barbecue facilities, toilets, a playground, skate park, basketball half-court and tennis court.
