Over half of the vehicle's value is the battery, and at a replacement cost of $40k-$50k today. I own the car and based on advice given directly by Tesla, I will rarely charge to 100% unless I absolutely needed it. On those road trips where 100% might be useful, I will still only charge to a maximum of 80% and plan accordingly to not run the battery below 20%.
Tesla Ownership stated to me that the ideal charge range is 50%-62% in order to maximize the long term life of the battery, and that regular 100% "max" charges will reduce the storage capacity of the battery over the long term. They said nothing about leaving it at that high state of charge, simply that charging to that level is recommended only as an "occasional" practice. I'm taking their advice since they are in the best position to know.
The condition of my battery in 4-8 years will be a resale issue. There will be many Model S vehicles available for pre-owned sale by that point in time, and I'm certain that how you have treated your battery and its remaining useful life will be factors for buyers in determining value. I would like my battery to have as much capacity as possible some years from now when I may be selling it, in order to recoup as much resale value as possible.
