For those parents thinking to buy Macbook Pro/Air for their kids for school, there are a few options to cut your costs.
- For those receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A, you get "SchoolKids Bonus" payment. Google it and you will get more information.
For those like us not qualify for those, there are few options we can cut the costs:
1. Check if your workplace do Salary Sacrifice for laptops. What this mean is, you can purchase the laptop and take the receipt to be "salary sacrificed" through your work salary. The company will reimburse back the costs of the laptop, minus the GST.
What this mean, your Taxable income for the year is reduced by the amount you paid for the laptop, while company get the benefit of the GST credit form the laptop you purchased.
2. Purchase the laptop under your name, you gain the benefit of tax deduction of laptop depreciation (over two years from the date you purchased)
Although you don't see the immediate cash benefit, but both help to reduce your taxable income at end of the Financial year for Tax Return.
One particular benefit of the salary sacrificing is, you can do one laptop per year. This mean, since macbook pro/air has very good re-sale value, you can sale the macbook after one year and buy a new one with minimal lose. This mean you will always have a new laptop. |
