Academics career is pretty good. For the salary level, you just need to HR website of each uni.
pros:1) flexible time. You are not as busy as industry. Plus you are almost free during school holiday. The money is not bad (not as good as industry), but most of the time quoted salary is just before super. So for example you are senior lecturer, you probably get $80-100K + 17% super. Note, so equally you earn 80-100K * 1.17.
2) you got lots of benefit when traveling around the world for academic conference. Most of the time, you can get reimburse the cost ( a few thousand one session).
cons: 1) All the promotion depends on the number of papers you published. Also, the rank of the academic journals. To get a job, you have need to have good paper published. My supervisor will fly to US to recruit academics soon. so, the job offers all depend on the publications.
Personally I am doing PhD but also working full time in industry. My plan is to work in the industry for a few years then go back to uni.
For the money part, industry pays better than academics, but work is much more demanding. Working in industry is more challenging and also keeps me update with the market every second. However, sometimes it is frustrating when your strategies do not work and lose $$$$. Academics life is relaxing and you can think deeply into one matter or issue, while in industry you cannot and you are forced to process and swallow information very quickly, which I do not like personally sometimes.
Pay in good year is good, bonus (could be 3-4 or even bigger ) is huge, just like you (or my friends) heard in shanghai, HK, sydney, London and New York ( That is the same golden rule which works in investment industry around the world). However, when market is like this, every one is worried about losing its job. Now every bank or financial institution is cuting its staff..... |
