Before asking children to retell a story that has been read to them:
1. Carefully select the book. The story should have a main character, setting and plot.
2. Select 1 or 2 vocabulary words to teach the children so they will understand the story and be able to retell it.
3. Develop a plan for teaching the words.
4. Select the concepts or ideas the book teaches that you want to emphasize. Some books teach many concepts so decide on one or two that are most meaningful to the story.
5. Develop a plan for teaching the concepts.
6. Prepare questions you will ask when reading the story and at the end of the book. The questions should be about the main characters, plot and setting— things that are important for the children to remember about the book.
7. Select props for children to use when retelling the story.
8. Plan questions to ask/prompts to give if children get “stuck” when retelling.
When reading the story:
1. Prepare the children to retell it. Before you start reading the book, tell them to listen carefully since they will be asked to retell it. For example, tell them they will need to remember what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story if the intent is to practice sequencing information. If the intent is to make inferences, tell them to think of things that have happened to them like the characters in the story.
2. Teach the vocabulary words and explain the new concepts/ideas.
3. Ask questions when you read the story and at the end of the book about the main characters, plot and setting
After reading the story:
1. Set the stage. Children will share less information and fewer details if they know the adult has heard the story or has just read the book. So, it is important to ask the children to retell the story as if the adult has never heard it before. This sets the stage for the children to share as much information as possible. You can say: “I just ready the story,_____. Please retell the story to me and pretend I have never heard it before.”
2. Use prompts—if needed. Sometimes it is difficult for children to start telling a story. You could say, “Once there was…” or “One day…” to help them start. If children have difficult remembering a part of the story, you can: a. Ask, “What happened next?’ or b. Repeat the child’s last sentence and add “and then….” “The dog ran home, and then…?” or c. Say, “Tell me more.”
Ideas for practicing storytelling:
Make it a part of your routine to read to your child each night and get them to tell one story to you from the pictures of a favourite book.
Tell someone else. Read the story to your child then ask them to tell it to someone else, a family member, younger sibling or even a teddy
Play schools. Children love to line up dolls and teddies, sit on a chair, hold a book and be the teacher, telling the story.
Sequence stories. Scan and print some pictures from familiar stories, or buy some cheap or second fairytale books and cut up the pictures. Help your child to put the pictures in order and tell the story.
Make your own stories. Take some photos on a family outing, print and slip them into a mini photo album and help your child make up a story to go with the pictures. Share your stories with family and friends.
Be the narrator. Try making a slide show on the computer or ipad using your own photos and recording your child’s voice telling the story.
Act it out. Use dolls, toy figurines, or plastic animals to act out a familiar story. Tell the story as your child acts it out, remembering to use the story structures discussed, then your child can tell as you act it out. Try using dress ups and letting your child be the character.
