Speaking from personal experience - 1st baby in private hospital, 33 wks now with 2nd baby, same OB, same private hospital.
1. Private hospital definitely has nicer amenities. Medical facilities are probably the same as public, but it's a much nice private room (queen size bed), tastier food and better service. So there's no sharing with another mother and husband can stay the entire time.
2. The private hospital you choose will influence which OB you hire. This is because an OB usually only delivers babies in one or two private hospitals. Conversely, the OB you choose may also decide which private hospital you must deliver in. Depends on which decision you make first, i.e. choose your OB first or choose the private hospital first.
3. In order to use your private health insurance (PHI), you must have satisfied the minimum waiting period which is usually 12 months. So, if you are planning to get pregnant, make sure you have cover 3-4 months before hand.
4. PHI only covers the hospital stay (i.e. delivery + x nights) portion, it does not cover any of the following:
- OB management fees ($3000-4000)
- OB consultation fees (monthly, 3 weekly, fortnightly) which can range from completely bulk billed (i.e. free if you have medicare) or $100 (medicare will provide partial rebate).
- Anaesthetist fee ($500-1000)
- Pediatrician fee (varies, depending on the baby's condition)
- pathology tests performed on the baby during the hospital stay
5. Usually, all PHI will have an excess fee to use the policy. If you go for a lower excess, your annual premium may be higher.
