Major prawn farm on Legune Station luring international investment

The company planning to build one of the biggest prawn farms in the world on a Northern Territory cattle station says the project is starting to attract plenty of international interest.
Known as Project Sea Dragon, the $US1.5 billion plan by Seafarms Group is to build 10,000 hectares of production ponds on Legune Station near the Western Australia/Northern Territory border, capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of black tiger prawns a year for export.
Seafarms executive director Dr Chris Mitchell was one of the key speakers at this week's Northern Australian Investment Forum in Darwin, an initiative by the Federal Government to match international investors with major projects planned for northern Australia.
"It was a great chance to introduce this project to international investors and hopefully open up discussions," Dr Mitchell said.
"We can see from the audience [today] there's quite a bit of interest, and a couple of people have approached us.
"A lot of Chinese investors are here, but there are other investors from around the world and we are looking at global capital markets, so the investment might come from any part of the world."
Dr Mitchell would not go into details about who had approached Seafarms Group, but said the company was seeking about $US150 million to assist in the first stage of the project, which it hopes to start next year.
He said Seafarms was seeking approval to begin the first 1,000 hectares of production ponds, as well as a commercial hatchery, breeding centre and quarantine centre.
"We're aiming to get the first stage of the project underway about this time next year," he told ABC Rural.
"Our estimate for that investment is about $US150 million, and that's the budget for the first stage of the project. Ultimately there will be more required."
Dr Mitchell said there was still plenty of work to be done on Project Sea Dragon, including discussing an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with traditional owners, completing an environmental impact statement, and coming to arrangements over land tenure.
He said the Federal Government's proposed Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility was of great interest.
Expected to begin in 2016-17, the facility will offer up to $5 billion in concessional loans over five years to encourage and complement investment in northern Australian infrastructure.
Project Sea Dragon has been granted major project status by the Northern Territory and Western Australian Governments this year. |
