St Kilda Beach

stkilda"

From St Kilda to Kings Cross is 13 hours on a bus, as Paul Kelly will reliably tell you.

Luckily for us, this classic Melbourne bathing spot is only a short trip from the city and offers good swimming and amenities.

The pier is a favourite spot for sunset strolls and you're never far from St Kilda's eating and drinking hot spots.

Public transport: Take the 3, 16 or 96 tram. It will take about half-an-hour from the city.

Safety rating: 3/10 (least hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible), showers and there are food options nearby.

Parking: Very few options for parking, better to take the tram.

Sandridge, Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and Middle Park

portmelbourne

These bayside beaches are some of the closest to the city for a quick dip after work.

Middle Park is popular spot for kitesurfing and beach volleyball while there are playgrounds nearby too.

Public transport: It takes about 20 minutes from Swanston Street on the 109 tram to Port Melbourne. The number 1 tram also takes about 20 minutes to get to South Melbourne beach.

Safety rating: 2/10 (least hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible), showers, dressing sheds. Shops, cafes and food kiosks nearby.

Parking: Not great, public transport is a better option.

Brighton

Brighton

You don't need to own one of the iconic bathing boxes to visit the ever-popular beaches at Brighton. Which is lucky, because they can sell for up to $260,000.

There are two main beaches here, separated by a foreshore reserve. The main beach is right in front of the train station.

Dendy Beach - where you'll find the bathing boxes - is about 500 metres from the station, north of the reserve.

Public transport: About 25 minutes from Flinders Street Station by train on the Sandringham line.

Safety rating: 3/10 (least hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible), showers, picnic tables and playgrounds. Shops and food kiosks nearby.

Parking: 100 spaces.

Elwood beach

Elwood

A well-developed beach popular for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and boating. Despite being in the bay, there are sometimes waves big enough surf.  Large foreshore reserves have public barbecues and picnic areas.

Public transport: The 606, 600, 922 and 923 busses can drop you about a 10 minute walk away.

Safety rating: 3/10  (least hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible), showers, dressing sheds. There is water access for the disabled. Food options, including a pizza restaurant, nearby.

Parking: 100 spaces.

Williamstown

barking

A long, popular beach backed by well-kept, grassy reserves. South-westerly winds can create waves big enough for surfing.

It's best to swim at the western end of the beach, where the surf club patrols and it is relatively shallow. It is more rocky at the Pavilion end of the beach.

Public transport: The beach is a ten-minute walk from Williamstown Beach train station. It takes about 25 minutes to get there from the city.

Safety: 2/10 (least hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible) and showers are next to the life saving club. Public barbecues, picnic facilities, playground and bike path.

Parking: 250 spaces in a sealed car park.

Sandringham

barking

Great swimming, well-kept reserves and excellent walking and cycling tracks make Sandringham a perennial favourite for Melburnians looking to cool off.

There are two parts to the beach: a narrow, difficult to access southern half, and an easy access, well serviced and more popular northern half.

Public transport: Half an hour from the city on the Sandringham line. The train station is a short walk from the beach.

Safety rating: 4/10 (moderately hazardous)

Facilities: Toilets, showers, dressing sheds, barbecues and easy access to shops.

Carpark: There are car parking spaces but they fill up quickly on hot days.

Altona beach

barking

This three-kilometre long, western suburbs beach is popular for its boat-free zone, which extends 200 metres east of the pier. Most facilities are close to the pier and surf club. It's best to swim at high tide, otherwise it can be a long wade to reach deep water.

Public transport: 30 minutes from the city to Altona train station. It's a 10 minute walk from there to the beach.

Safety rating: 1/10  (least hazardous)

Facilities: Reserves at either end of the beach with barbecues, playground, toilets and a kiosk.

Carpark: 100 spaces.

Carrum beach

barking

An easy to access, sandy swimming spot near the mouth of Patterson River. Carrum beach is part of a 9km stretch of sand that goes all the way to Frankston.

Public transport: About an hour from the city by train, this beach can also be reached from Dandenong on the 857 route bus.

Safety rating: 3/10 (least hazardous).

Facilities: Toilets, no showers, and reserves have barbecue and play facilities.

Carpark: 150 spaces.

Mentone beach

barking

Backed by 20m-high bluffs, this is another eastern suburbs pearler. Mentone beach faces south-west and is somewhat protected for west and northwesterly wind and waves. The groynes here are popular with fishers.

Public transport: Mentone station is about 40 minutes from the city by train. From there, it's about a 15 minute walk to the beach.

Safety rating: 3/10 (least hazardous).

Facilities: Toilets (including accessible), showers, kiosk and picnic facilities.

Carpark: 50 spaces.
