The Story That Should Not Have Happened

List of Characters

Lion- A proud, pompous character who likes to act as the hero. He is very beautiful and strong, which contributes to his pride. Has a very idealistic outlook on things. Has a rivalry with Bear.

Bear- A strong, hot-tempered character that used fighting to solve his problems. He is considered to be a bit dim-witted. Has a rivalry with Lion.

Fox- A sly, cunning character. Other characters are willing to seek him out for help because of his intelligence. Is a very good orator and can easily convince people to see his side.

Wolf- A cruel, greedy character that will do anything in order to get what he wants. He acts very sycophantic towards Lion. He has a bad history with Buffalo and has bullied small animals in the past.

Buffalo- A very introverted character that prefers to stay out of current affairs. He can be very self-centered sometimes, priding self-preservation over everything else. However, he is very hard-working. He holds a grudge against Wolf.

Antelope- A timid character. He is weaker than most of the other animals, and is often jealous of their strength.

Dog- A quiet character. Prefers to act rather than to just speak.  

Mouse- Citizen of the forest.

Rabbit- Citizen of the forest.

Squirrel- Citizen of the forest.




Prologue: In the tropical dry forests of Southeast Asia, there was a village of animals. Their existence was a peaceful one until disaster struck. The forest was plagued by a long draught. A group of the forest’s mightiest animals came together to come up with a solution to the situation. This is their tale.  


Act I, Scene I

Scene opens in an open field. There is a large, round, stone table sitting in the middle of the scene. Bear, Lion, Wolf, Buffalo, Antelope, and Dog are all sitting around the table (left to right in that order). They are having a meeting to discuss the problems in the forest.

Curtain up.

Lion- Our forest is in a state of disarray. What are we going to do? The dry season is lasting far longer than we expected. Our crops are beginning to wither away, and our drinking water is in short supply—

Fox enters. All eyes turn to Fox.

Fox: Urgent news! The southern part of our forest has been burned to a crisp!

Everyone Gasps

Fox: It seemed that the fire didn’t stop until it reached the desert region of the southern border.

Lion: But that’s where we stored our food! Who did this?

Fox: I don’t know! I can’t believe that it would have been started by one of our citizens.

Wolf: It would have to be. In the past, only lightning has managed to start a storm, and there hasn’t been a thunderstorm for a long time.

Lion: We need to get to the bottom of this. Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended .

Bear: We need to attack who did this! Coward, hear me now, we will bury you !

Lion rolls his eyes.

Lion: Okay, but we have no idea who did this. Who are we going to bury? Let's try common sense. A novel concept .

Bear gives an irritated grunt.

Bear: You just oppose all war, don’t you?

Lion: I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. We need to get down to the bottom of whatever caused this and negotiate. I am the eternal optimist. I think that, over time, people respond to civility and – rational argument .

Bear: They burned a section of our forest! This could be considered an act of terror. I don’t negotiate with terrorists. I destroy them .

Lion and Bear continue to argue. Antelope and Buffalo begin a conversation.

Buffalo: Look at those two bickering, like calves. Even when it comes to the well-being of our forest, they can’t manage to put aside their differences to come up with a solution. Really, these small differences shouldn’t matter. If things are going in the same general direction, then we should just go with it.

Antelope: Though I’d say that honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress .

Buffalo: Yes, but there’s a difference between honest disagreement and that.

Buffalo points to Bear and Lion who are still arguing.

Antelope: I assume that they are just upset by the fire. After all, that was their entire food supply.

Buffalo: Personally, I could care less about the food supply being set on fire. I don’t eat berries, I don’t eat fruit, I don’t eat fish, and I certainly don’t eat meat. Grass is good enough for me, and I still have some to eat. (Aside to himself) Maybe this isn’t all bad. Their food supply is gone, but there’s still enough grass for me. Maybe one day they will all become weak with starvation, and I’ll be strong.

Antelope: (Aside to himself) Maybe you have enough grass to eat, but after you eat, there isn’t very much left for me.

Bear is pounding his paw against the ground.

Bear: This is getting us nowhere! We need a plan.

Lion: Given the current state of our forest, maybe it would be better for us if we relocated. We could start a new village in a more prosperous area.

Wolf: That’s a great idea! Lion, you always come up with good ideas.

Fox: We will need someone to go find this new world. Who will go?

Everybody looks around until Bear breaks the silence.

Bear: We need to find someone to go. But I have to defend our forest and protect us from invaders.

Lion: I agree, we do need to find someone to go. But in such hard times, I need to stay here to be able to help everyone through this. I am the pillar of support for our forest; if I leave morale will go down. Our citizens will become scared, and panicked if I leave.

Wolf: You are both right. You both have very important duties here, and I must help you with those duties.

Fox looks around.

Fox: Then who can go?

Buffalo: Don’t look at me. I’m perfectly content to stay here. I get 3 square bites a day. Sure, the grass is a bit yellow, but it’s good enough for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s green grass or yellow grass; grass that fills my stomach is good grass .

Antelope: Well, I really want to go. But I’m afraid that I won’t do this well. If I fail at this task then I will be letting everyone down.

Fox glares at everyone.

Fox: These are hard times. We may be out of food by tomorrow morning, and you are all still here talking about all useless things?

The animals are irritated, especially bear, but Dog intervenes before anyone can say anything.

Dog: This is a very important task. We are in need of a new place to go and need to find it quickly. If is inconvenient for the rest of you to go, then I’ll go if you all agree to it.

Lion: That sounds like a great idea.

Bear: Yes, it’s a good idea.

Buffalo: I agree.

Antelope: Me too.

Wolf: Remember to come back quickly. Don’t waste any time.

Fox: Sounds like a good plan. Good luck, Dog.

Dog walks off stage.

Fox: That took too much effort for us just to find someone to send on an expedition. We need to crown a king. We have never needed one before, but we are in a crisis situation right now. If we had a king, the king could just mandate someone to go do something, and that would be the end of it. There wouldn’t be this much argument.

Bear: That sounds like a great idea. And I think that the king should be someone who is the best fighter. (Aside to himself) This could work out very nicely for me. I am the strongest out of this group, and I’m the best fighter. I could take on anyone who dared to challenge me.

Lion: I agree. Many things would be much easier if we had a king. (Aside to himself) Naturally, I am the best fit to be king. This would be good for me.

Wolf: I think this could be good for our forest. But I think that the king should also have a second-in-command as well. That way, the king can deal with all of the large, important issues, where the second-in-command can help him with the daily tasks. Things would run much more smoothly. I think that I would be a good fit for being the second-in-command.

Buffalo snorts and laughs with derision.

Buffalo: You? You’re not qualified to be in a position of leadership. For one, you’re cruel. Not to mention, you have tried to change the forest’s historical records to cover up your past mistakes. Plus, you are still occupying my territory.

Antelope: And you have bullied a lot of small animals!

Wolf holds up his paws in a gesture of peace.

Wolf: Some things are in the past, and—

Bear: Shut up! We aren’t here to talk about you right now. We’re here to talk about the kingship!

Buffalo: Well, if we’re talking about the kingship, I don’t think that we need a king. We should be able to take care of our own matters without having someone else get involved.

Antelope: I don’t think we need a king. It’s better to discuss problems in a group like the way that we do now.

Fox: Then let’s vote on it. A show of paws or hoofs for who wants to have a king?

Lion, Bear, Wolf, and Fox all raise their paws.

Fox: All opposed?

Antelope raises his hoof.

Everyone looks at Buffalo.

Buffalo: I abstain from voting, but I still stand by what I said. We should not meddle in the affairs of others. We need to learn to manage ourselves.

Fox: Well, the final tally is four for having a king, one against, and one who has abstained. Majority votes for us to have a king. So now, we need to decide which one of us is best for the role.

Bear: I think that I should be the king. I can defend our forest. I am the strongest out of all of us, and I can beat anyone in a fight.

Bear looks over everyone in the room, daring any to challenge him.

Lion: Wait, a minute. I think that I can be a better choice.

Bear: Are you challenging me to fight?

Bear tenses up and is getting ready for a fight.

Fox: Whoa now, let’s calm down. We’re voting for a king, not getting ready for a fight.

Bear: But I am the strongest! I am the best fit to be king!

Takes shoe off and starts hitting the table with it.

Lion: There are other aspects to being king. One must have a strategic mind as well as the ability to fight.  

Bear: I know how to fight, if you are unconvinced then come at me. I would be the best leader.

Lion: I have a different vision of leadership. A leadership is someone who brings people together.  Also, a shoe is fit for wearing. A shoe is not for hitting tables. Nor, is it used for throwing at people.  

Bear still looks very angry and looks like he wants a fight.

Fox: Let’s discuss this calmly; we’re all civilized animals here. We should be able to make this decision together as a group. Why don’t we meet back here at another time to vote on who should be our king?

Lion: Fox is right; we should take some time off and thing about this. (Aside to himself) And maybe I can think of a better way to become king. This should be enough for me to come up with a good idea.

Bear: All right.

Curtain Down.  Fox, Lion, Antelope, Bear, Wolf, and Buffalo exit.

Act II, Scene I

Scene opens in Fox’s house. There is a door at stage right, and a small wooden table at stage left. There is a small chair next to the door/ Fox is sitting at the table. He appears to be waiting for someone.

Curtain Up

Fox: I have a feeling that my house will become busy very soon. The other animals seemed very interested in my idea. I bet that Bear will be the first to find me. With his impulsiveness, I’m sure that he’s dying to talk about this.

At Fox’s last word, someone knocks on the door.

Bear: Hello? Fox, are you home?

Fox shows a little smirk.

Fox: (Aside to himself) And there he is now.

Fox gets up from the table and walks to the door. He asks in an innocent voice.

Fox: Who is it?

Bear: It’s me, Bear.

Fox opens the door.

Fox: Hello Bear, my friend. It’s nice to see you. Let’s sit.

Fox leads Bear to the wooden table.

Fox: What brings you by here?

Bear: I wanted to talk to you about being king. I am very angry right now, and it was all this meeting’s fault. I’m the most powerful animal, I should be king. I came by to ask: what do you think about all of this?

Fox: I agree with you. You should be king. After all, you are the strongest in the forest and we always need someone strong to protect us. But, we are going through hard times right now. If you want to become king then, you’re going to have to something fast.

Bear: Times are really hard. But, I don’t want to get into a fight right now. You know how much I eat normally, but I haven’t eaten in a while. I’m very hungry and that has caused me to become much weaker. If someone challenged me to a fight, it would be much more difficult for me to win.

Fox: You have a point, but remember, you’re not the only one affected by this affected by this food shortage. You are hungry and weak, but everyone else is too. Not to mention, you have a layer of fat that many of us don’t have.

Bear looks down at his potbelly.

Fox: Even though you’re weaker than you were before, you would still have an advantage over your opponent. Plus, if you are both weakened, then the fight would be shorter as well.

Bear nods along with Fox’s words.

Fox: If you were both at full strength, the fight might last days before you win. If you fought now, it might only take an hour or so. And wouldn’t that be better? You’d be able to become king faster.

Bear: You make a lot of sense. I’ll go find Lion later and challenge him to a fight for the kingship.

Fox: Good luck to you my friend. May everything turn out to be in your favor.

Fox walks Bear to the door.

Exit Bear.

Fox goes to sit by a chair next to the door.

Fox: I’m sure that someone else is on their way here.

Antelope is walking up to Fox’s house. He is looking around nervously.

Antelope: (Aside to himself) I sure hope that no one sees me…

Antelope knocks timidly at the door.

Antelope: Um…hello? Is anybody home….?

Fox: Just a second!

Fox opens the door.

Fox: Antelope! How nice it is to see you. Come in. Was there something you wanted to talk about?

Antelope: Yes, it’s about the whole king business. I really don’t think we should elect one, it would be better if we just stayed a council like we are now…

Fox: I agree with you, but don’t you have more pressing issues to worry about?

Antelope: What are you talking about?

Fox: Even though Dog went off to find a new place for us to live, there’s no telling when he will come back. In fact, he might not be able to find a new place to live. The grass here is disappearing by the day; I’m getting very worried for you, my friend.

Antelope thinks about Fox’s words.

Antelope: The grass has been getting sparse recently…

Fox: And, you know, if Buffalo wasn’t around to eat all of the grass, then maybe it would last longer. Then you might have enough grass to last until Dog comes back.

Antelope: You’re right. If Buffalo wasn’t around, then I would have enough grass to eat.

Antelope has a sudden realization.

Antelope: I would have a full stomach for the first time in months. I’d live so much more comfortably.

Fox: Yes, yes you would.

There is a slight pause as Antelope thinks the issue over.

Fox: So have you heard the news about Blue Bridge? It’s very shabby these days and is in desperate need of repair. The boards are loose, and the ropes are frayed. If a few more ropes snapped, then it might be very dangerous for someone to cross the bridge. Especially someone heavy.

Antelope is shocked by Fox’s comment.

Antelope: You mean the bridge by Buffalo’s house? Are you meaning for me to try and kill him?!

Antelope looks at Fox in complete shock and outrage.

Antelope: I can’t believe that you would mean for me to commit murder!

Fox: I didn’t mean a thing. You’re my best friend, and I want to help you. The grass here is becoming very sparse and there’s no telling when Dog is coming back.

Antelope is stunned into silence. Fox lets him think about the situation and slowly responds.

Fox: Well, I wish you the very best of luck.

Fox guides Antelope to the door.

Exit Antelope.

Fox: I have a feeling the next visitor will be Lion. A gentleman is always last.

As Fox finishes talking, someone knocks on his door.

Lion: Hello? Fox? It’s me, Lion.

Fox hides a smirk as he goes to open the door.

Fox: I’ll be right there Lion.

Fox opens the door.

Fox: What a nice surprise! Come in, come in.

Fox smiles hospitably as he leads Lion to the wooden table.

Fox: So, what bring you to my humble abode?

Lion: I was hoping that we could discuss matters regarding choosing a king.

Fox: Ah. Well, out of everyone in our forest, I think that you would be the best fit for king. You are very smart; you could make good political decisions for our forest. Not to mention you are very charismatic and you keep the moral of the forest up, the other animals love you. And, you are also very strong, another factor of being a good king.

Lion smiles at Fox’s flattery.

Lion: Yes, I have thought of that. But how am I supposed to convince Bear? All he can think about is fight, fight, fight. He can’t think of anything else.

Fox pauses a moment to think.

Fox: Well, if you want Bear to be able to see your greatness, you might have to fight him. He doesn’t listen to anyone; all he thinks about is fighting.

Lion suddenly looks a little bit uncomfortable.

Lion: Is there another way besides fighting? I’m not completely sure that I can defeat him completely in a fight…

Fox: Well, I may have a plan to help you with this situation. I can make sure that you can win the fight.

Lion looks on with interest.

Lion: What is it?

Fox: You know, my friend, I really want to help you. I’ve always liked you and admired you.

Fox pauses here. Lion waits for him to say something, but talks when Fox doesn’t speak up.

Lion: Yes, I know. You’ve always been good to me and a lot of the other citizens. You’re a good canine. If you help me become king, then I will make sure that you will be reimbursed for your efforts.

Fox shakes his head.

Fox: No, I didn’t mean it like that. I truly want to help you because I think that you can make a good king. I don’t want to help you for my own sake, but for the sake of the animals of our forest.

Lion beams with pride.

Fox: Well, even though you might not be able to beat Bear in a fight while he is at his peak strength, you might be able to beat him when he’s in a weakened state.

Lion: Well, how are we going to weaken Bear?

Fox: With this food shortage going on, Bear will become weakened very fast. If you fight him while he’s in a state of starvation, you are likely to win.

Lion: But this food shortage affects us all. Bear will become weaker, but I will as well. It doesn’t help the situation if we’re both weak. And Bear has a thick layer of fat, whereas I’m very lean. I might become weak far before he does.

Fox: But, there’s a way for you to be strong.

Lion: How do I do that?

Fox: With Bear out of the picture, the only challenge to your authority would be Wolf.

Lion: But Wolf always seems so eager to help. I don’t think that he would have any ill will towards me.

Fox: Don’t let his obsequious ways fool you. Wolf is a very power-hungry animal. He will do anything he has to in order to become king. He might even be as underhanded as to harm you so that you are out of the way.

Lion: All right. But what’s your plan to help me defeat Bear?

Fox: The plan is that if you eat Wolf, then you will be able to regain enough strength to overcome Bear.

Lion: Eat Wolf? That seems a bit harsh…

Fox: Well, Nobody likes him. If you ate him, I don’t think anyone would mind. In fact, some of our citizen will even be grateful for you doing this. Eating him may seem barbarian to you, but in the end it’s all for the greater good.

Lion: I don’t think that I can do this. It seems like it would be immoral to kill him in cold blood and eat him.

Fox: If eating Wolf can help you become king, then it will be better for our forest and our animals. If you won’t do it for yourself, at least do it for our forest.

Lion: You have a point there. I’ll have to think about it.

Fox: You do what you have to do, my friend, but either way I still feel that you would make the best king. It’s not that I personally have something against Wolf, but eating him would be the right thing to do for our forest and our animals. I think that Wolf should be proud to do this service for our forest.

Lion: You’re making a lot of sense. If it is really for the good of our forest, then I’ll do it.

Fox walks Lion to the door.

Fox: Good luck, my friend!

Exit Lion.

Curtain Down

Act III, Scene I

Scene opens by Blue Bridge. To the right of the bridge is Buffalo’s house. A little farther over is a large open meadow. Antelope is standing there pacing across the stage. He walk, stops, shakes his head, and continues to pace.

Curtain Up

Antelope: I can’t believe what Fox said. Does he really expect me to do this? Buffalo is my friend…

Antelope shakes his head again. He is still pacing.

Antelope: But then again, maybe Fox has a point here. Why should he get to eat more grass than me? I’m smarter than he is. I can also run faster than him, I can go more places. I’ve seen more than he has and I’ve seen farther out than him too.

Antelope walks over to the bridge.

Antelope: This bridge is old, it really is falling apart. It wouldn’t support much weight anyway. If I did break a few ropes, it wouldn’t even be that noticeable.

Antelope begin to gnaw on the ropes of the bridge.

Antelope: I should get to live comfortably too. I deserve to be able to eat as much grass as I want, and not just the yellow crusty leftovers.

Antelope continues to gnaw at the rope bridge.

Antelope: It’s time for change.

Antelope continues to gnaw at the rope. After he is satisfied, Antelope walks away from the bridge with a satisfied smirk on his face. Exit Antelope


Later in the day, Lion goes to Blue Bridge to think everything over.

Enter Wolf. As he walks, he mumbles to himself.

Wolf: (Aside to himself) That Lion. He won’t take me seriously. He always uses me. And I still have to pretend that I’m his dutiful follower and suck up to him all the time. Someday this will be different. I can work my way up, an if something awful happens to Lion, well I will readily take his place.

Wolf sees Lion standing by the bridge.

Wolf: Lion! There you are. I‘ve been looking everywhere for you. I wanted to discuss something with you.

Lion: I’ve been wanting to talk to you too.

Wolf: Great!

Wolf: (Aside to himself) I bet that Lion wants to discuss his plans of becoming king. Maybe he even wants to make me second-in-command! That would be great. If something bad happened to Lion then I could become king!

Wolf: You know, I’ve been thinking that you would make a great king. I just wanted to let you know that if you ever need help with anything, I’m your canine.

Lion: Do you really want to help me become king?

Wolf: Yes, I really do. I really want to help you—

Lion: Are you willing to help me to the best of your ability?

Wolf: Yes, I’m willing to help you do anything. And after you become king—

Lion: Are you really willing to do anything?

Wolf: Of course! And I and also—

捏泥巴人

Lion: Very well. You must know that to become king, I need to do battle with Bear.

Wolf: Yes, I remember this. You’ll beat him, no problem.

Lion: Yes, I know that I can beat him. But there is nothing certain in this world. To make sure that I can beat him, I need a good meal. You see, I’m very hungry right now, and the hunger has made me weaker.

Wolf is looking nervous.

捏泥巴人

Wolf: But all of our food was burned in the fire.

Lion: Yes…but…

Lion starts walking towards Wolf.

Wolf starts backing away from Lion.

Wolf: What? Don’t eat me! I’m grisly, wouldn’t you rather eat Antelope instead? He’s nice and tender! Or maybe Buffalo? He’s tough but—

Lion cuts wolf off mid-sentence and eats him. Lion lets out a long burp.

Lion: Wolf, you have made a great sacrifice for the well-being of our forest. Now that I have a full stomach, I’m going to find take a nap and wait for Bear to come find me. I’m sure that he’s looking for me right now.

Exit Lion.

捏泥巴人

Enter Buffalo. Buffalo is grazing on grass.

Enter Antelope

Antelope: Good morning Buffalo!

Buffalo: Good morning Antelope. How are you?

Antelope: I’m doing great. And you?

Buffalo: I’m doing just fine.

Antelope: Good to hear. Oh, by the way Buffalo, I found a really nice patch of grass the other day.

Buffalo: Really? Where?

Antelope: It’s over on the other side of the Blue Bridge. I grazed there yesterday, it was great. The grass was green and very tender.

Buffalo looks down at the dry yellow grass.

Buffalo: That sounds great. Can you tell me exactly where it is?

Antelope: No problem! If you go across Blue Bridge, all you have to do is take a left when you get to the big tree and then take a right when you get to the stream. The patch of grass should be right around there.

捏泥巴人

Buffalo: Thanks for letting me know. You always find the best grass. I guess it’s because you run faster than I can.

Antelope: All, right then. You go ahead then. I’ll be right behind you.

Buffalo: Okay. I’ll see you there. (Aside to himself) It looks like I was right in helping him all those times.

Buffalo walks towards the bridge. When he steps on the bridge, he falls and lands in the chasm below. Buffalo screams as he falls.

Antelope: Goodbye Buffalo.

Antelope looks down at Buffalo’s broken body down in the chasm. He feels a bit of remorse for the death of his friend.

Antelope: I didn’t want to harm you. But, right now the situation has given me no other choice. You eat all of the grass; there isn’t enough for me after you’re done. If this continued, I would have starved to death. I did what I had to do.

Exit Antelope

Enter Lion

捏泥巴人

Lion is walking around the open meadow.

Enter Bear

Bear: Lion, I’m glad I found you.

Bear walks over to meet Lion.

Lion: Likewise, I wanted to tell you something. But you can go first.

Bear: I’ve wanted to fight you for a long time. But, if you agree to me becoming king, then I promise that I won’t fight you.

Lion smirks.

Lion: I’m not afraid of a fight. Moreover, I’m not afraid of you. If I fought you, it is for the good of our forest, and others will support me.

Bear: Are you sure? This is your last chance to back out.

Lion: I will fight you. This is for the greater good.

捏泥巴人

Lion and Bear begin fighting. After a short amount of time, Bear begins to become tired, but he lands a final blow to Lion. In the process, Lion manages to return a blow, both fall to the ground. They lie there unconscious. Fox is watching from behind a bush.
