émigré
Introduction
Whilst the name émigré continues in the same vein as the Exile, there is a big difference in the style and make-up of the wine. Exile is a single vineyard wine, whereas émigré is the opposite in that it comes from an array of vineyards across the Barossa. In addition where Exile is Shiraz rooted and émigré mainstay is Grenache.
The Winemaking
émigré is mix of varieties - Grenache, Cabernet and Shiraz, sourced from an array of vineyards across the Barossa. Like Exile the vines are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to the acre. émigré grapes are then hand picked. The wine receives extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak, and are thereafter in the same oak.
Tasting Notes
Fabulous texture with elegant yet subtle notes of crushed cherries, earth, blackberry, chocolate pepper and saddle leather. The tannins are almost melted as with the Exile and there is a superb backbone and lift to the wine before a long bright finish. A beautiful bouquet of cassis, blueberries, raspberry, violet, pepper, smoked meats and eucalyptus bring this wine alive! This wine will evolve beautifully in bottle over the next 10 or so years.
