“This small gallery offers visitors a free program of five exhibitions per year about Melbourne’s culture, historical, and artistic life, interpreted mainly through council’s Art + Heritage.”

“The newsboy was familiar figure on Melbourne’s streets from the late 1800s to the 1970s, and has been etched into popular memories of the city of old.

The exhibition captures the experiences and representations of Melbourne’s newsboys, the societies and clubs formed to foster their wellbeing, and the regulatory framework of juvenile labor in the city.”

“Every millionaire was once a newsboy – or so the saying goes. Countless politicians and footballers, mayors and union leaders, started out as pint-sized entrepreneur.”

……These boys parade the streets in filthy clothes, stand in the middle of the path, hinder one’s progress and are for ever emitting loud cries anent their papers ……For their own part, it is silly to say they are earning their living at this calling. They earn very little, and what they do earn is at the convenience and expense of the long suffering stupid public ……
