The Swiss-based company, which just last week said products under its labels were not affected by the escalating horse meat scandal, said it had informed the authorities. Nestle has been forced to remove nine different products from its shelves and now faces possible charges of negligence from Swiss authorities. Among the products withdrawn are Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, in Italy and Spain. Lasagnes á la Bolognaise Gourmandes, a frozen product for catering businesses produced in France, will also be withdrawn. A statement published on the company's website read: "When reports first emerged in the United Kingdom about the fraudulent mislabelling of beef, we enhanced testing of our products and the raw materials we use across Europe. "We are now suspending deliveries of all our finished products produced using beef supplied by a German firm, HJ Schypke, a subcontractor of one of our suppliers, JBS Toledo NV. "Our tests have found traces of horse DNA in two products made from beef supplied by HJ Schypke. "The levels found are above the one per cent threshold the UK's Food Safety Agency uses to indicate likely adulteration or gross negligence. "There is no food safety issue, but the mislabelling of products means they fail to meet the very high standards consumers expect from us. "We want to apologise to consumers and reassure them that the actions being taken to deal with this issue will result in higher standards and enhanced traceability." The discovery of horse meat in products labelled as beef began in Ireland last month and has rapidly spread across Europe, resulting in several product withdrawals and government investigations. |
