March 2011: Earthquake and Tsunami in the Pacific

On 11 March 2011 there was a large earthquake off the east coast of Japan which generated a tsunami. Information on the earthquake and tsunami can be found on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
A tsunami warning is in place for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Wake Island, Taiwan, Yap, Philippines, Marshall Islands, Palau, Midway Islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Johnston Island, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Howland-baker, Hawaii, Tuvalu, Palmyra Island, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Jarvis Island, Wallis-futuna, Samoa, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, Mexico, Kermadec Island, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Pitcairn, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Antarctica, Panama, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru.
In Japan, the extent of damage, including around Tokyo, is not yet clear. There are reports of disruption to transport services, including airports. Narita airport in Tokyo has been closed as a precautionary measure. Many train services are not functioning and movement around the main island of Honshu has been severely disrupted. You should contact your travel agent or airline for current information on disruptions.
Australians in affected areas should monitor the media for information. Australians should follow the instructions of local authorities.

Australians with concerns for family members or friends in the affected areas should first try to contact them directly. If they are unable to be contacted or you still hold fears for their safety, you can call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on +1300 555 135.
