THE music industry's copyright hit squad has raided the offices of Perth internet service provider Swiftel over its use of the BitTorrent file sharing platform. Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI) officers executed so-called "Anton Piller" orders sanctioned by the Federal Magistrates Court in Sydney at Swiftel's offices in central Perth. MIPI general manager Michael Speck said he would use the evidence gathered in the Perth raids to assess whether a copyright action would be brought before the court. While other Australian ISPs have been raided by MIPI, the information gathered has generally been used to pursue action against individuals, rather than the service providers themselves. The BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system has been widely reported as being responsible for as much as 30 per cent of all internet traffic. Australia's legal system has already been a common legal battleground for internet-related copyright cases, with websites, university students and Kazaa developer Sharman Networks all facing lawsuits brought by the music industry.
