Introducing Database.com By STEVE FISHER | Published: DECEMBER 6, 2010

These are exciting times today in the world of enterprise IT because big changes are underway. The industry is fundamentally transforming. Applications are moving to the cloud. Platforms are moving to the cloud. Collaboration is moving to the cloud.

But behind all of this, the foundation for all enterprise software is the database – the core technology for managing all of the data within the enterprise. And what’s really happening under the hood is that, as we move to the cloud, the core database architecture is fundamentally changing for the first time since the introduction of the client/server model 30 years ago.

In the cloud, no longer can databases be focused on a single application and application scale. Or even across an entire enterprise, and enterprise scale. Instead, the cloud is fundamentally a data utility that all applications, and all enterprises, can just tap into – it’s a multitenant, shared architecture that manages itself. Developers and enterprises no longer need to worry about scaling, and tuning, and backups. Even upgrades as we’ve known them become a thing of the past because cloud databases must upgrade themselves while ensuring that all existing applications and integrations keep working.

What happens when people are provided a data utility in the cloud? Our customers have shown us what happens. Last quarter there were 25B transactions against our cloud database. That’s a huge number. That’s over 3,000 requests every second of every minute of every hour of every day for the entire quarter. And even more important – that’s up 50% from last year. That’s the power of a cloud database that removes all the barriers and just let’s you focus on innovation.

And let’s look at data. Last year there were 10B records in our cloud database. That’s a big number. This year it’s 20B. Double in one year. And of those 20B, 12B are from your custom database tables where you are using this cloud database for your own custom applications.

But a cloud database is also another fundamental change. Unlike the old model, where the database provider pressed the database onto a CD and shipped it out, and from then on it was your responsibility to make it work, a cloud database is a partnership. As you’re making those 25B requests, and storing those 20B records, the team responsible for the database has real-time visibility into how well that database is performing. That allows the development team to tune the database in real-time, and even more importantly to gain insight into what you actually need and use that insight to fundamentally re-architect the database to meet your needs. The result is that in the face of 50% growth in transactions and doubling the amount of data, performance has actually improved. And all of that is provided as a service.

But of course, our industry does not stand still. The applications of today are not the applications of tomorrow. Exciting new technologies emerge, such as social computing and mobility. But the old model couldn’t transform. It couldn’t evolve. It was on a CD. Upgrades were painful and expensive. But a cloud database is fundamentally different. They are always evolving. For example, last summer we released Chatter, and overnight all 20B records in our cloud database became social, had a feed, and could be followed. And just last month we added support for the next generation APIs and authentication standards optimized for mobility. So that cloud database is now a cloud 2 database, ready for those next generation applications.

This is the cloud 2 database that powers the Sales Cloud, the Service Cloud, Chatter, and all 185,000 Force.com applications. But what if we opened it up, to any developer, any language, any platform, and any device?

That is what I am so excited to be able to announce to you today. A new product – Database.com – the first true enterprise cloud 2 database that is open for any developer, any platform, any device, that is proven and trusted by 87,000 companies, and that is ready for the next generation of social and mobile applications.

So what exactly is Database.com? Let’s drill into it.

First and foremost it is an enterprise database, with the functionality you need to quickly and easily build enterprise applications. It supports the proven relational model for designing your database. But the world has progressed in the last 30 years since the relational database was introduced, and people also expect to be able to find information just by searching. And so Database.com also includes a full-text search engine. It also includes a sophisticated identity and authentication model, and builds on that model to include a rich sharing and security engine to make it easy to determine which users get access to which records. Database.com is programmable, supporting triggers and stored procedures. And finally, a cloud database needs to be designed for integration. So Database.com automatically generates an API as you build out your data model. Of those 25B transactions that you made last quarter against our cloud database, over 10B of them were API calls – other computers exchanging information with Database.com.

But of course, Database.com is a cloud database, which means no hardware, no software, and it automatically scales, upgrades, tunes itself, backs itself up, etc. It’s a true data utility.

Database.com is an open database, accessible from any language – Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby, etc – any platform, including not only our cloud platforms, such as Force.com and VMforce, but also Amazon, Google, Azure, Heroku, etc., and of course accessible directly from any device.

The foundation for any cloud service, and especially a cloud database, is trust and security. With Database.com, we have made the necessary investments to earn your trust, starting with complying with the most critical standards – ISO 27001, SAS 70, etc. – so that you know that you can trust the way we run our service. We have the physical and network security that you demand, as well as the sharing and security features built right into the database.

But what really sets Database.com apart from other databases is all of you. When new customers choose to use Database.com, they always ask us the tough questions. Some of our customers, such as Symantec, Dell, and Cisco, are among the leaders in IT security, and you can be sure when they consider using our cloud database, their security teams put us through the wringer. And you know what? Sometimes they think we can do better. What’s powerful is what happens next – when we fix an issue for one customer, instantly the database for all 87,000 of our customers just got more secure. That’s the power of multitenancy and why it matters.

And finally, Database.com is designed not just for the current generation of applications, but also for the next generation, with a built-in social data model, and optimized for mobility. If you think about it, the client/server architecture of 30 years ago simply wasn’t designed for the Internet and mobility. It was designed for a high-speed low-latency local area network. But that is not the world of today, where devices can be anywhere, and that’s where Database.com really shines.

The world is moving to the cloud, and with that move the core database architecture is finally changing. The first fundamental transformation in databases in the last 30 years, and with Database.com we are opening that data utility up to everyone. Pretty exciting.
