The Australian Grand Prix was called off at 2am early Friday morning after a crisis meeting where the majority of teams argued for a postponement, according to reports.

The move followed McLaren’s withdrawal from the Formula One season opener after a team member tested positive for coronavirus.

While the sport’s governing body, the FIA, is yet to officially announce the cancellation of this Sunday’s race, the BBC was told by two senior F1 sources it will not go ahead.

A majority of the teams were unhappy to continue in the wake of McLaren’s withdrawal — and a host of other sporting competitions across the world suspending their seasons — and the FIA appears to have acceded to their wishes.

Confusion still reigned at Albert Park on Friday morning as a lack of communication left fans in the dark.

Australian Grand Prix chairman Paul Little was approached by several reporters on his way into the track — and appeared to have different messages each time he responded.

Little told Nine the grand prix would go ahead as planned over the next three days before telling Seven immediately afterwards “we’ll have to wait and see”.

There was also a BBC report drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were flying home.

But fans were at least given some clarity when Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced at 9am they would not be allowed in to the track regardless of the FIA’s decision and were told to go home.
