City’s car share policy a runaway success

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

The City of Sydney’s support for car share has proven a runaway success, with the target of 10 per cent of households signed up to the scheme by 2016 already exceeded.

Car share use in Sydney has grown dramatically since it was first introduced in 2007, with one in 10 of all city drivers now using car share, or 30,000 residents and businesses.

The City is updating its car share policy to build on its success.

“This success shows car sharing is an incredibly efficient use of parking spaces for residents and businesses,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“These changes will ensure car sharing spaces are allocated where they’re needed, well monitored and managed, and that the sector remains competitive.”

“Car sharing helps free up parking spaces on narrow city streets for people who need to maintain their own cars.”

Car sharing has been adopted by cities across Australia and around the world. Research shows it delivers significant environmental, transport and economic benfits by reducing traffic, parking pressure and greenhouse gas emmisions.

The first Car Sharing Policy was introduced by the City in 2011. Changes to the policy include:p

Ensuring allocated spaces can’t be on-sold or transferred to new operators;
An annual fee for operators to cover administration costs;
Setting minimum thresholds that are to be reached before new spaces are created;
Annual reports to be published online and open to third party auditing; and
Allocation of spaces to car sharing operators until 2020.
City data also shows:

Car sharing is used by 25,000 city drivers – 19,000 residents and 7,000 from local businesses;
On average nine new users sign up to car sharing schemes every day;
The City provides 670 car share spaces; and
Car share spaces take up 1.6 per cent of the City’s parking spaces outside the city centre.
The City welcomes feedbackon the revised car share policy. Visit http://sydneyyoursay.com.au/car-sharing-policy-updatebefore 20 June to make comments.
