Common sense needed for apartment proposals

One of the most significant projects of our time - the North West Rail link - will transform the way we live and work in the Sydney Hills.

We know that more than 23,000 new homes and more than 57,000 jobs will be created as a result of the rail. It will bring many new opportunities to residents and businesses.

Council’s role in this project is to work with the State Government to ensure the homes and jobs of the future meet our needs and expectations.

However, we are already starting to get requests for densities around the new stations that exceed both the State Government’s and our own recommendations.

For the area around Cherrybrook station, the State Government’s Corridor Strategy recommends densities of three to six storeys - and we agree. I was astounded to be presented with a recent proposal for more than 1,100 apartments to be built at West Pennant Hills, an amount of more than 3.5 times greater than the Corridor Strategy recommends.

While most of us understand there will be changes in densities along the rail line to allow more people to make use of the new Metro trains, I want to make it clear that ambit claims that are massively out of step with both the Corridor Strategy and our community’s expectations won’t be supported.

We can’t ignore the fact that the rail is coming and change will come with it. However, I can assure you that I will work with my colleagues to ensure we achieve the best possible outcomes for everyone within the Corridor Strategy framework.
