ADELAIDE will today break the record for the longest heatwave recorded in any Australian capital city, as the extreme weather spreads into two other states.
Temperatures in the city are predicted to rise to 40 degrees Celsius.
It will be the 11th consecutive day of temperatures above 35 degrees in the South Australian capital, surpassing the previous capital city heatwave record of 10 days above 35 degrees, in Perth in 1988.
But the all-time national heatwave record isn't under threat - Marble Bar in northern Western Australia experienced 160 consecutive days at or above 37.8 degrees Celsius (or 100 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer of 1923-24.
Adelaideans can expect no immediate relief, with temperatures forecast to remain over 38 degrees until next Wednesday.
Fire authorities have declared total fire bans in 13 of SA's 15 fire districts today.
Total fire bans have also been declared for the NSW south-western region and Victoria's western and central areas today, with temperatures predicted to reach the high 30s and low 40s in some parts.
More than 50 Adelaideans have sought hospital treatment for heat-related ailments during the heatwave, with SafeWork SA warning employers not to push workers too hard.
"Heat stress has become a clear health issue," SafeWork SA executive director Michele Patterson said.
"Working in a hot environment can also affect workers' concentration and that is when harmful incidents are more likely to occur."
